Heater for sump

Hello, I wanted to get some opinions on Heaters.
My setup is a 90 gallon tank, 30 gallon sump, and 50 gallon fuge. I dont let it get that cold in my house and we are in Texas.
Do people genrally go with 2 heaters so if 1 fails theres a backup or just 1?
This heater will go in my sump

Aaron,

I only have one for my system. I have a capacity of about 65 gallons and my heater is also stashed in my sump. That being said, your system is twice as big as mine, having a failsafe is a good idea and heaters are cheap. I plan to add another in the fall.

What brands are good? Is there a diffrence between the titanium and Plastic ones? Which is better? I remember Rob mentioned it in one of the podcast but I listend to them all in the last few days and cant remember which one he talked about.

i prefer the plastic over the titanium.
check out the show #53 for some details on those heaters

my favorite heaters are Ebo Jager, and the Visi-therm stealth.

no such thing as ebo jager anymore. now its eheim jager. eheim has made minor changes, but long term effect is still not known. ebo-jagers were a heater before its time, still considered to by the best by many. check out hagen fluval tronics also.

im one for the tronics personally, but this is a question thats on topic, but off topic.what ever happened to those heat mats u guys produced a few years back that sat under the tank itself. like a reptile heat pad. that never made it here, but im assuming u couldn't use styro for the base with this!?

I know Rob prefers plastic (I'm not at that podcast yet). But I am very happy with my Pro Heat II IC Titanium heater. I have never gotten good accuracy out of other heaters.

im not against titanium heaters, you just have to be careful wit the temp probe, and use something better than a suction cup to hold them in place.

the nice thing with titanium heaters is they are usually higher wattage and shorter. so they are easier to fit in your sump.

Well I guess a good thing is that I have a Chiller that has a heater plug, I guess when temp drops below what I have set it will turn on that plug. So the chiller will really have the final say on if the heater is on or not.
Has anyone done it this way?

those heat pads fell out of favor because plexiglass was not good heat transfer material and became brittle. also turned out that it was not a good idea to have pad under glass also, i was an unfortunate user myself. some people here use heat coils in the sand bed.

yes, i have a coralife chiller with outlet for heater. the outlet does not get power unless chiller is off. that way the heater does not fight with the chiller. my bigger systems uses medusa dual phase controller.

next time try the newer version called fluval tronics. updated thermostat, fail off design, bumper guards to prevent heater from touching tank or sump wall or floor. also UL listed.
