Responsible Collection of Fish & Corals

I just recently began listening to your podcasts and have been considering setting up a saltwarer aquarium. One thing that does bother me is the fact that most of the fish and invertebrates are collected from the wild. What do I need to look for when purchasing to make sure that the animals were captured in an environmentally responsible manner? By that I mean that the animals are collected with techniques to make sure the wild population is not being "over fished", the natrual reefs are not being destroyed/conaminated, etc.

This issue is actually be a deal breaker for me, unfortuantely. I have seen some information about this online, but I have not found enough to fully answer my question.

Thanks!

hello,
you bring up a very good point.
and this is something i am familiar with. It is possible to create a eco friendly reef tank.
This is refered to as a ZERO impact reef system. the basic idea is that every living thing in your tank has come from a source other than the wild. Fish are from private or commercial breeders, as apose to wild caught. and coral come from tank raised or aquacultured specimens. the Rock and sand come from souces such as Agarocrete and the use of play sand.

the catch is that you are limited to what fish and coral can be tank raised, aquacurltered, or fragged. For those with oppsoing viewpoints, it is stated that coral and fish collection for the marine aquarium hobby does not have a negative impact, i usually dont agree. the way wild fish are caught can be pretty rough. however, there are some coral, that can be harvested from the wild with no negative impact to the eco system, or even to the specific colony that it was harvested from.

before i write pages on this, i want to say this. Your effort to setup a ZERO impact system is commendable, and for sure it is NOT out of reach. i will do a show in the near future discussing this in more detail.

i see from your profile(and this post) that you are into nature research and conservation. if you want to do an interactive show we can set something up. otherwise i will just outline some points and explain how people can setup a system like this.

Thanks for the reply, Rob. I actually work in a research group at a cargo airline, not in a biological or natural resources field. Sorry for the misleading information in my profile. In gradutate school, I was involved in ground water protection and research that that sort of peaked my interest in conservation in general.

I am looking forward to your upcoming show on this topic.

thanks again!
jamie

Even better
it good to see concerned hobyists, that actually think about htis stuff...

yes, i will do a show about this. i actually have the next two shows lined up and almost ready to go, so what might happen is i might just do this as a third show and release it the same week as one of the other show, so you dont have to wait three weeks to hear it. i would expect to have something out by the end of the weekend for ya (if all goes well )
