Although....even after I provided such a link, I'm NOT the one to debate global warming with
It's all cyclical my friend. It is MY opinion, but it is where I stand. Yeah...there are some "catalysts" that make the peaks and valleys of "data" (whether it be temperatures, water pollution, air pollution, erosion, you name it), that we could, in fact, control. BUT...there are others that we can not... and should not...and in the end...the "ying" has its "yang".
Basically, what I'm yappin about...is if it weren't "humans" causing the so called troubles today, it would be someone/something else. We are the "dinosaurs" of 2006...and in the future, it will be something else that causes a cold age, additional global warming, etc. etc. etc....it's all a big cycle.
I'm gonna start a campaign to stop cows from passing so much methane gas!! That's my contribution to the environment.
yea its a tough one..
are we (humans) doing alot of to make it worse.. yea probably...
are we causing it.. no.. (again maybe making it worse..)
would it happen if humans didn't exists... yea.. probably..
and thats all im gonna say about that...

Y'know... I'm slowly but surely beginning to call y'all "family".
I really do like the conversations here, as they "gel" and with input from so many varied sources. BUT..with all of that, there is such a great "civil" feeling at the TR that I note very rarely at other "online communities".
You guys rock! Even though I am still (in his Boston accent) WICKED Jealous of Adam and his following my dreams through oceanography and marine bio. Is 38 way too old to get into Woods Hole Oceanographic??
I have to second Gwen's statement. In the scuba class I took this past weekend, one of the students was 62. So if he can take a scuba class at 62, that just shows us "young-ins" we are never too old to follow our dreams.
I also agree with ya Dave...TR does feel like family.

back to bleaching. I don't want to start an argument, just get an idea or two out there (all theoretical and open to debate of course). unfortunately it will only get worse (human or no human influence). Climate change will effect so many things in the ocean, such as possibly shutting down the "ocean conveyor belt" which helps regluate oceanic and atmospheric temperature, and many other things, not only bleaching. Back to reefs, many people don't think about this, but increased atmospheric CO2 (which i don't think anybody can deny we are doing) could possibly result in acidification of ocean water, which can lead to dissolution (or inablitiy to properly precipitate) of the aragonite corals use to build their "skeletons". In other words, it may be bad enough one day that reefs dissolve (just a theory of course, but those of us who use a calcium reactor know how important it is to prevent excess CO2 from getting into the tank). just something to maybe think about...

The guys only 62? He's just a young-un. The last time I went SCUBA diving, certification wasn't even thought of, I was 20, I'm 68 now and just getting my certification, too. Life doesn't end when you go past 60, friends.

Reaching my 70th BD, I realize that I cannot help but grow old. However, I refuse to grow up!!! My wife would tell you, "He may be 70 but, He's going on 17". Life is wonderful with a woman like that.
A couple of interesting observations about retirement I had that should interest you young-uns.
After taking two falls, one from 25', and not only surviving but coming out litteraly unscathed my wife "forced me to retire". What a nice wife, eh? But I found retirement boring the first 6 month's. Sue would go to work and I'd be pretty idol all day. Then one day it dawned on me, I was sitting around waiting for the union to call and put me to work. That's what they did when I was layed-off. I finally figured it out, the union ain't ever gonna call you, Dick, you're not layed-off, your retired! I realized I could do anything I wanted within certain budget restraints. I was no longer bored, I got active. We built a home in FL and moved here 6 months ago. Yes, we love FL. Yes, we know we might not like the hurricanes. So that's observation number one.
The second observation pertains to your life right now today. Put more money aside for your retirement!!! You are going to need it!!! That is no joke, friends. We're okay, but realize just how much we need and with only one income and my SS, it doesn't leave much leeway. Save and invest now. You will be happier tomorrow.
End of lecture for today.

We moved from chilly WI to FL for a couple of reasons. First, Sue's mom winters here in Vero Beach and summers in MN where Sue is originally from. We kept coming to visit in February each year and fell in love with the area. Because I was retired it was my job to do the property search. I promised Sue I'd find some land within an hour of her mom's place. We live 8 miles from her home. You might think, well that's easy. Well, no it wasn't. I searched for two years to find this land and it is proving to be a wonderful place to retire to. I don't remember if you've seen the house pictures or not so, if I've posted them before don't go there. If I haven't, here's a link to Our Florida Home
Second, I was growing coral in a 100 gal system in WI and selling or giving away every piece I could grow. After spending so many years learning how to keep a marine tank stable and the fish healthy and then to grow coral and keep clams and all that's happening in the aquaculture field, it was a natural extension to do something in retirement with the skills I developed. Like many reefers, I don't have a degree (in anything) but I stayed with the advances made in the hobby. Essentially, I have a degree from "The School of Hard Knocks" which you know is very expensive.
Sue wants me to live to 100 and she knows a happy man has a better chance than a grouch. She knew I'd keep my mind and hands busy raising coral. She also knows I'm a people person and this will keep me involved with wonderful people like you.
Wow, ask me a question, get a lengthy answer. Sue also knows I talk too much when a simple answer like (WI) would suffice. She's a great life partner.
