I had heard about this on the raido on NPR, they didn't explain it very well, but that picture sure tells the story. Lobster Bisque anyone?

Hmmm...wonder if it's a freak albino mutant or something. Interesting that it's blind AND white....sounds more like a genetic mishap!
well not a freak as there were more of them.
blind- at that depth there is no light to speak of so eyes are not needed for this spp and how its life works. it was recorded in competition with two crabs for some food, so it can sense and fend for it self. there are tons of spp w/o eyes.
white is a very popular color around hydrothermal vents.

The "hairs" on the chelipeds (pincer arms) are probably used to detect vibrations, which will help make up for having no eyes, since eyes would be useless at that depth.
ohhh...that wasn't so clear from the article that there were more of them. Then, that makes more sense.
yeah, i realize that lots of animals that are that deep don't have eyes (or are blind)...kind of obvious....I guess I was just thinking that the white AND blind seemed more like albino-like...
but,

that was something new for me. Thanks! :-)
So, Adam, what do you do for a living? Do you work as an oceanographer?
the hairs also housed bacteria that are still beign studied as tothier purpose- most likely a symbiotic relationship similar to zooxanthalae, but with hydrothermal vent chemicals instead of light.
yes, i am an oceanographer, my area of specialization is benthic habitats.
