Spotted Hawkfish died!!!!

Last night I found my spotted hawkfish dead. It was a great fish but always acted weird. When he was hopping from rock to rock he would never watch were he was going, sometime he would land in the anemones. I don’t know if that caused his death or not.

Here are my parameters, I think they are outstanding.

Salinity – 1.024
Nitrates – 0
Nitrites – 0
Ammonia – 0
Ph – 8.3

The thing that gets me is my Long Spine Urchin was eating him!!!!!!! Is that normal? It didn’t take long either. Man I’m down in the dumps……

Params look fine to me. I'd think that if an anemone killed him it'd have eaten him.

Obviously it was a liberal urchin that ate your somewhat confused Hawkfish. :-)Wierd unexplained losses like this drive me crazy. Look like you did everything you could.

Sorry about your Hawk.Unexplained deaths are a reality at times.I can't begin to tell ya the losses over the years, the "leapers" on the carpet really take the cake( can anyone relate?)We just keep pluggin' away.
You mentioned he wasn't acting right from the start,so take some comfort in the fact that you really didn't do anything wrong.
On the bright side, your PH is kickin'!!Haven't seen a solid 8.3 myself in a long time.
p.s Watch out for certain Hawkfish species. Some consider gobies lunch.
All the best,
Larry.

I am pretty sure I am going with only tank raised critters. Seems somehow safer and a lot more humane.

Unfortunately, many fish are not available tank raised. Many corals can be purchased (or traded) as frags and grown out. Tank raised fish and frags are often hardier and better adapted to captivity than wild caught. Given a choice, I always choose tank raised.
