well i am preparing for fish and i have set up my QT
its a 10 Gallon AGA aquarium. it has a Marineland Pengiun 100 filter with the bio wheel. i am running some junk hang on heater that i may change if it doesnt hold a good temp for me. i also have the small aquaclear powerhead in there moving about 80 gph. i am planning to get a small flouresent light for it and some PVC piping in there for caves. i currently have some LR in there to maybe start a cycle? or make it safe for fish, but i have heard you arent supposed to have LR in a QT. should i do a cycle with the shrimp or is the way it is fine. the bio wheel was on my tank for a while but i dont have much of a bio load so i dont know if i got and bacteria on it.
You don't really cycle a QT tank. You manage the water quality with water changes. Many people use a sponge filter that is kept in their sump to get a bacteria population established and then used in a QT tank when needed. The sponge part is disposed of after it is used and the tank is taken down, sterilized and stored until you need it again. I've never had a bio-wheel type filter but I would say that you would not want to keep using the any thing that could not be sterilized between uses.
ohh and also thats the reason, because i have heard that water bacteria isnt enough for the fish and then the bio wheel doesnt have much bacteria on it since my tank doesnt have much to pick up.
ohh okay. well i guess my first fish will be a chromis though just incase something goes wrong, i hate to say it, but its the cheapest fish that i want. i hate to sound like a killer or something but i wouldnt be too happy if i lost 20 bucks from a clown or something dieing
It seems the next generation of reefers are starting out with some really good habits. That's 2 peeps on Talking Reef this month that are less than 20 years old that have started up a QT tank. (now THAT'S a run on sentence if ever I spoke one). Us older farts need to watch and learn.
yeah, well done keys, A QT is definately the way to progress in leaps
& bounds in this hobby.
In regard to your chominids, they do prefer the company of their own kind, & being that its your first edditions, if you have one single, you might never see it till your upcoming edditions are entered. Ive even had a whole school hid in rockwork till the next edditions were added & deemed friendly, odd ways indeed. i lovem, simple & eligant fish.
I also am going to be starting up my QT ank soon also, so I just need to throw some RO salt water in there an let it run for a few days and keep and eye on the water quaity and do frequent water changes? (I am the king on run on sentences) So the set up and maintanance for the QT seem to be very similar to a freshwater tank, just with salt in it. Is that a correst assumption? My first fish are also either going to be 3 chromis or 3 cardinals.

Mark, I put 1 chromis in at first and, like V said, it hid. I added the other 2 a week later and then they all stayed out.
Shananagans, on the QT basically good monitoring and frequent water changes are what is needed. I keep a sponge filter in my sump and pull it out for biological activity in my QT tank. Don't reuse the sponge.

keep a heater as well and some good circulation in order to keep up the oxygen levels...I assume though that that was included in your preparations....
some PVC tubing or something to hide in is also great for reducing the stress load on the new fish, but make sure it's something that you can disinfect at a later time point.
