Are UV lights harmful to fish ?

Just read an article that if you stay under Ulta Violet lights for a considerable amount of time you are risking skin cancer. I just converted from fresh water to salt water and use UV lights as a night light on my tank for about 6hrs is that harmful on corals and fish or does it only affect humans. I do not recall any problems when I had fresh water but maybe I was unaware of the UV dangers.

Some say that uv a,b,c are harmful B and C more so than A. Thats why the MH bulbs have an outer glass globe to prevent the UV spectrum from hitting the animals not to mention humans. If you are using a uv light be careful to have a shield on it and don't look at the bulb with out some type of shield on it. The hgi bulbs have a glass shield for the same reason as the se bulbs, to cut down on the uv.

UV-C Rays are deadly. That is what are generally used in UV Sterilizers. Tanning beds, for example are UV-A and UV-B.
