Anyone have a good suggestion for a quiet protein skimmer. My tank is in the bedroom, and quiet is a priority. I have a 55 gallon tank just getting started so far I only have like rock in there. I have heard that the coralife super skimmer is quiet, but have heard mixed opinions about its performance.
I have a Euroreef on the big tank and to me it seems quiet and my little 12 gal nano has an AquaC Remora which isn't so quiet, but its one of the best HOBskimmers available.
Just make sure you do your homework before buying a skimmer- it is one of the most important decisions to make and you need the best one. Like they say "don't skimp on the skimmer" or you will be paying for it later Avoid the red sea prizm skimmer- learn that lesson from me....
No Sump so it needs to be a HOB. I already wasted some money I tried a Skilter that was LOUD and useless. I have heard that the coralife super skimmer is quiet, but I am not sure about its effectiveness.
Does the Aqua C remora gurgle like a power head with the ventrui air line open?
never used an airline on a PH, so not sure...
but to me it sounds like the toilet is running and won't shut off, but there was a fix to that and its MUCH quieter for me
For HOTskimmers, I'd recommend the AquaC Remora line or CPR BakPak 2R. They are both quiet and can be modified to be even quieter. Also, they ARE efficient for smallish tanks. They say that they are rated UP TO 75G but I'd not use it on more than 50 gallons.
My Euroreef ES 5-3 is real quiet, but you need a sump.
do you plan to add a sump. if you do than i would carefully plan it so you can get the best skimmer for your setup. i went through a few skimmers because my system just grew over time. i went from a seaclone100 to seaclone150 then to a euro-reef cs180. (seaclones suk! dont get them for tanks bigger than 55) that was a big waste of money but hey, gotta learn somehow right.

I've extended the tube from the PH to the system to drop the pump lower in my water. This avoids burning the pump out if my water levels dropped. Again, I use mine in a sump so surface skimming was not a necessity.
I've also created surface skimmer tubes and such for true, HOT applications. The skimmer wasn't getting the surface film and I was frustrated with the buildup on top of the water.
I replaced the thin O Ring with a thicker one purchased from Home Depot. That helped quiet the unit quite a bit!
I also tossed the Rio pump and used a Maxijet 1200. That increased my skimmate by at least 1/3.
