Skimmer vs. skimmer vs. skimmer....

Hey Rob,

I was wondering if you might feel like doing a podcast specifically addressing the different types of skimmers and their pros and cons.

Along with making all the up-grade decisions for our larger tank, I'm trying right now to research as much as I can on skimmers and how to best optimize efficiency.

1. When comparing venturi-type skimmers with downdraft and air driven, does tank size play a role. Should one type be chosen over another based on the amount of water through-put?

2. According to Anthony Calfo, it's best to get the most amount of overflow as possible going first through the skimmer. So, what do you think? Do you think it's best to plumb the overflow directly through to the skimmer or rather into a small compartment of the sump?

3. What about using two skimmers in a tank set-up? Would you use two skimmers that could each handle the size of the tank by themselves or two that add up to the full tank size? (Does that make sense?) I've heard recommendations of using two, because then you can clean them alternatingly and have the best efficiency....

Look forward to your take on this...

Cheers from snowy Sweden!

i will be highlighting co-current, counter current, venturi, and ETS/downdraft skimmers..
then answering skimmer questions.

if you have specific questions try to get them in ASAP, as i will be recording this show tonight..

I primarily have the question that I started the thread with, but are you interested in addressing specific makes of skimmers, or would you rather stay away from that?? There's specific questions that I have about certain brands of skimmers, but I could always ask them in the thread following the show.

Oh...also...could you address the flow rate through the skimmer? Anthony Calfo recommended to go with a slower rate through the sump - like 4-5X turnover. Would you agree?

Looking foward to it! Thanks!

i can try, but i had not had a load of experience with different brands. might be more efficient to ask them here

can give you a simple answer here, many skimmers have different flow rates.. there is no magic number

yes slower rates are usually better in a fuge, as it gives stuff a getter chance to do the filtering it needs. along with keeping it a relativity gently environment for pod growth. as for a sump since there is nothing really happening in there, personally i dont thin it would matter
