yes, they are equipped with Venturi needles....I know...it's huge! But, it was free!

Okay...that was good to clear up one thing there.

So, this would be the water flow:

Overflow - left side of sump - baffle - mid portion of sump with DSB - baffle - right side of sump - one bulkhead providing water for return and one bulkhead providing water to skimmer

Then do I go from skimmer back into sump again?

Free. WOW!!! You've got the idea! Who ever said plumbing a tank would be difficult?

Look at the left side of the center chamber. There's a 4" area and a 4" divider. I like to provide an area for pod production where they can do their thing (procreate) with out predation from things we might throw into the sump because we catch them eating or killing more desirable things in the main display. I use Pukka shell. That gives the pods untold numbers of caves, crevasses, etc, to hide.

Is the area you're talking about the chamber with the blue foam?

Was my direction of water flow correct? What about where the skimmer returns to?

sorry dick...don't mean to use up your generosity!

Christi, There are five wonderful gifts one can easily give to another. They are, Acceptance, Patience, Time, Love and Generosity. The more you give them away, the more you get back. So, you see I'm really being selfish.

I'm afraid I've confused you. In the first picture I wanted to give you a reminder of the piping system. The sump/refugium in that picture is a converted W/D that I bought because of being impatient to wait 4 to 6 weeks for my Acrylic manufacturer to build and ship a custom sump. The blue foam there is a filter to keep "things" in the sump area, eg, macro algae, snails, hermits, what ever you might house in S/R.

The next picture is a drawing of a simple sump/refugium design that I use when ordering a sump for my own use or a customer. The one I was too impatient to wait for. The dimensions change depending on tank size.

Looking from the left end there is a 4" area, then a partition coming down from the top, then a 2" area and a partition coming up from the bottom. Next a 2" space and a 4" diverter to direct the flow of water down into the depth of the S/R for better gas exchange and Nitrogen conversion in the sand bed. Then on the bottom of the S/R is a 4" area and a 4" partition separating a small area for Pukka shell to give the pods an area for doing their reproduction thing.

Does this make sense?
