HOB Skimmers

I am looking at HOB skimmers for my planned 70 gal mixed reef setup. I know that the use of a sump is preferred to the hang on back variety, but I have certain limitations that are pushing me towards the HOB. First, I have an existing freshwater system that I need to keep under the reef tank. I also have very real concerns about the additional risk of leakage with sumps and having water drawn out of the tank in general.

I am looking at the following two models.

1. Red Sea Berlin Skimmer Classic- Hang On
2. AquaC Remora Pro

Additionally, it appears I'll need to attach some sort of surface skimmer in either case. I saw that Rob referenced the Aquaclear surface skimmer or I might go DIY for it.

And one last thing. Can I "over skim"? Would either of these models even come close to skimming too much with a 70 gal setup?

Jeff

the remora, is probably one of the most recommend skimmers, but since i have never used any of them listed i cant comment on there performance.

as for over skimming, i think its "technically" possible, but i have never heard of anyone doing it of complaining that there skimmer over skims, so i wouldn't worry about that, especially with the units your looking at

the Berlin requires a much larger pump.

I have the regular AquaC Remora on a 12g tank. From the reviews I did, everyone was saying this was the best for HOB skimmers (the pro is prolly better). I wouldn't expect it to keep up on a 70g tank though.

I don't think its possible to overskim a 70g tank with a HOB skimmer- would be very hard.

Why are skimmers so expensive? Also, how much cash might you save if you go DIY?

when i was going to duplicate a $150 in sump skimmer i figured up all the parts, acrylic tubing, acrylic sheets, and all the little tubing. i think my cost came to around $90. now that wasnt including the glue and the little nuts and bolts i would of used. so i figured i should just buy the one already built and not worry about it. now i didnt try and cut costs at all. so depending on the design you should be able to be under $90.. and i feel skimmers are so expensive because there so simple. but there simple to a point that not everyone can make one themself. but thats just my 1 1/5 cents
