I want to make a 150 gal reef ready tank but have couple questions

I really want to make a 150 gal reef ready tank. BUT this what I want to do. I want to buy a standard 150 gal tall. The 48 inch long tank( I don't remember all of the dimensions). I want to make an overflow or buy one that would work for this tank. And drill the hole myself. I can find these tanks alot cheaper than a tank that is reef ready. I can glue the overflow in place and I can handle drilling into glass. I do know that you need a special drill bit but that's no big deal. Has anyone ever done this here before? Where can I get the overflows for this tank or can someone tell me how to make them. And all I mean by that is how tall do they need to be, do I need two for this size tank or will one do.Can I just follow the cut out dimensions from my 50 gal Oceanic tank?

You may not be able to completely copy the set up on your 50 gallon. Chances are on a 150 gallon tank, the bottom will be tempered glass that cannot be drilled! Depending on the tank, the sides may also be tempered. If not, you might be able to build a horizontal overflow chamber that drains out the back. Most people make their overflows from clear or black acrylic that they route out the teeth in.

I would also consider the possible issues with a 150 tall. It will require very strong lighting and long arms to reach the bottom of such a deep tank, which is probably why they aren't popular reef tanks, Just some things for you to think about.

Yeah never thoght of that. Thanks for bring that up poppin fresh. Those tanks are pretty tall so would very hard to get in and move stuff, setup or ckean something. I just need to stay in that 4ft. long range. I wonder if they make a 120 tall.

they do make a 120 that is 48" x 24" x 24" that you could look into. i would suggest getting one pre drilled. you will be taking a huge risk in drilling a new tank without tons of practice. the pre drilled tanks a drilled THEN tempered. if you try to drill the tempered glass it will shatter into a million pieces. the 120's that i mentioned above are VERY popular reef tanks around here.

I am doing exactly what you're talking about. I have a 4' 150g its 30" tall. Its a perfecto brand. the bottom is tempered so I drilled the back with 4 1" bulkheads and a horizontal overflow. I built mine out of black glass with no teeth, its 34"x 6"tall and 4" front to back. it is a deep tank but I plan on having rock work built up rather high. mines a work in progress hopefully i can post pics soon.

most of the tanks over 100g are temper in the bottom i recommend you to get one use or so and like that you will save the money if that's the problem
