durso half in half out of the tank?

hello all!
i have my 50 gallon seaclear and plan to drill it and wanted to do a durso, but it can be drilled throught the bottom because the tank is running now. so i was wondering if i could have a bulkhead with an elbow on the inside of the tank and then on the other side of the bulkhead is a durso. does that work?

thats where it would be drilled...sorry i have poor paint sskills

or should i just forget the durso outside and just have the elbow?

o yeah i also have my maxijet 1200 putting the water back over to the display side after it overflows,but if i leave it doing that and have my durso or whatever going to my sump and my sump return pump dies for some reason, will the maxijet make the durso sump overflow? because it will keep the flow going over the overflow and into the sump, but the pump wouldnt pump it back up...does that make sense? because i know when the water goes over the overflow, it wont all go into the durso so i will somehow need to move the water that goes into the rest of the back compartments to keep flow going. and if it will overflow if my sump return pump dies, then what should i do instead of using the MJ to pump back to the display? should i have it pump back to the durso compartment and have the sump return go to the display side instead of into the back compartment??..haha this is probably really confusing, but if anyone gets it, could you please help me..i have been thinking about it a really long time and its killing me

Hi keyozoxmfc,

I try to visualise what you have describle. Is your planned setup similar to the diagram below?

If yes, there should not be any problem of the sump overflow if there is sufficient volume in the sump to cater for the volume of the water in the durso compartment (up to the level of the durso pipe inlet) + the initial level of the water above the durso compartment divider.

Yes....it will work. This is the same concept I used in my seahorse tank:

This strainer and elbow overflow....

Leads into this durso-type stand and pipe out the back...

And into the sump below..

And eventually... it will go to another sump in the basement... though...it will be another tank and stand.. I'm getting rid of this one.

whew..thanks a lot..so i am assuming it doesnt matter whether the elbow faces up or down?...and would it be okay if the durso was all the way in the left compartment of the back of my tank? like this

Yes, there should not be any problem on which side you locate the durso pipe.

Important thing to note is that your sump must have sufficient reserves volume to handle the water when your return pump is not running.

okay thanks for the input. i guess IF for some reason it doesnt work on the left side, i could always just seal off the bulkhead and drill somewhere else..lol
