Reliability of Aqua Clear Filter motors.

I had a very strange experience the other day. I turned off the Aqua Clear 50 (It's body is glued into the Fuge) for a few to feed. And when I started it back up, even though it was filled with water, the motor would start and slow down to where you can see the impeller bouncing back and forth if you moved the intake tube over.

I had to take the unit part(Including draing water past that point) and take the impeller out and found not thing inside and everything moved smoothly.

Is there any issues with these unit or anyways to improve their reliability? I did not find too many nagative comments regarding these on the internet.
