ok i am anxously awaiting my overflow and all the fun stuff to make a sump however i have decided to go with a DIY arcrylic sump. now i am sitting down with Visio designing the sump around a nautilus skimmer. but my main concern is i want a sump with alot of water in it almost to the top of the sump. but i do know that if the power goes out the return tube will syphon back down all the water above the outlet in the tank. is there a way to fix that? do they make check valves for PVC? or do i just need to put the return outlet above the water level?
Wesley, I thought of a check valve as well, but in the end I realized that if that failed I was doomed! And I see what gunk builds up in my piping on a daily basis...
I sized the sump with the right level of water to come just below the top with the power off.
yea that is what i am afraid ill have to do but i really want my sump level to be like two inches from the top of the sump.. i figure if i put a open 90 degree peace of pvc just like 1/16th higher than the overflow box it might not make that much noise and i wouldnt get that much power outage syphon. but im not sure about that. i ordered two sheets of 1/2 inch arcrylic and 2 sheets of 1/4 inch acrylic today. im not sure what im getting into but i know the tank i am using right now is loosing sylicone and has scratches inside of it. so im think duane you might end up with most of my corals if i decide to do something earth shaking lol.
i imagine if you had your last chamber of your sump, (assuming there is a solid wall between it and the rest) if it was solid you could just have that section really low cuz almost no filtrations goes on there, then when the power goes out, that section will be the only one that rises The way to do this is have the pump intake really low, other then this, you'd have to put your trust in the check valves i have to say
I think i will start with my return nozzle above the water level in the display. im putting like 4 quick disconnects in line so it wont be that hard to work with.. thanks for everyones help once again....
