i never realized that I could use this in a HOB fashion. I constantly struggle with my 4 powerheads trying to generalte random patterns, maybe this is for me. I think it would leave less gear in my display and be more reliable. How random are they, truly random?
thats how i feel so i went and ordered one today. i cant wait to get it. i do have one question though. ( not to highjack) when the power goes out, would it syphon itself empty of water? would you have to reprime it?
A closed loop should always hold a syphon. Unless there was a leak in the plumbing. I am not sure if it would hold if the intake was exposed to air I should try that and see what happens. As long as the pump starts when the power comes on you are good to go.
I have always wanted to try a SQWD but I need to buy a bigger return pump first.
yep, since the intake and output are both from the same tank, then there is no chance of siphon, some pumps require priming (like mag pumps) but this only comes into play if the closed loop system was tore down and cleaned

the design that rob posted from melevs wacky brain does the trick. he has anti syphon attached to the design is i remember correctly. and the flow paddles aka scwd work well enough when u buy a quality unit! they are about $70- 80 a unit here, but thats import from the states prices!
u can buy 2 types, the water flow switching exclusively units, or the solinoid driven switching units & the designs of closed loops are open, its depends on how creative u can be in the shortest line distance & headloss possible. ive seen an external pump with a 4 way split flow right after the output work wonders off a decent motor!

yes, but he notes that if he were to rebuild it again, he would do with out these since the serve no purpose

Yes. I wouldn't drill any holes in the returns. They are unnecessary. If the unit is powered off, the water has nowhere to go, so back siphoning isn't an issue. However, let me add that by having anti-siphon holes in the returns, if the pump ever leaks or your plumbing breaks, the tank will not drain lower than those holes. So if you do use them, be sure they are submerged about 1".

i would say you could take two hangers of some type and hang it off the tank.. not clotheshangers but something cool like.........actually i am stumped on that one. ill get back to ya
