Rubbermaid Sump and Total Water Expansion Idea.

Hello everyone, I have been wanting to increase the total gallons of my aquarium to decrease the amount of water quality fluctuations within my aquarium but I just don't the funds to go out and purchase a larger aquarium at the moment. I was think about getting a large rubbermaid tub to place underneath my 180 gallon aquarium to complete this expansion. I already has a wet/dry filter that can easily be placed inside and allow the water to flow over into the rubbermaid as the collection area where it can be returned into the aquarium. Any thoughts or suggestions on this?

I was thinking about that but I spent so much money on it I just thought to leave it their and pretend its doing more then it actually is. I was a really hardcore mechanical filtration person when I first got into saltwater but I gained confidence in the natural way of things so yeah I'll dump it. Curious what is the larget rubbermaid you think I can get under their for a reasonable price?

pham411 is an unknown quantity at this point
ive used the 20 and 30 gal hard rubermaid containers from lowes. i think home depot has them too. as for the wet dry. if your going to set up a reef tank, remove the bio balls. they can be a housing ground for nitrates and can cause your nitrate levels to rise.

yu can go from 10 gallons up to 300 or 500 gallons...

rubbermaid stock tanks are awesome for this.. they are availible in sized from 50 to 500 i think.

i have a 70 gallon one, and it was about $60 brand new

My stock tank sump

JayBeDriften

Is this going under your stand? If so your looking at using a rubbermaid tote.

I have never used the rubbermaid totes, but I've seen alot of people using them. Get the rugged one's they seem thicker.

I do use a 150 gallon rubbermaid stock tank on my 300 gallon display tank. Very easy to drill so adding bulkheads is a snap, easy to light, and easy to access. I setup one side using eggcrate (light defuser) to place my frags, until my frag tank is ready to be picked up. 3/4 of the bottom is covered with LS and the other is covered with LR. Underthe egg crate are 4 or 5 big balls of Cheato.

Pham411, the only reason that I am even thinking about keeping the Wet/Dry Filter in operation is because I'm considering housing some clams and they could definitely use a few nitrates in assisting their growth.

I think I will have to take a trip to home depot to see what they have. After it stops thunderstorming a pool over my head. On a side note I'm starting to get jealous of everyone having photographs of their tank in their signature.

Very nice setup. I'm curious to know though, what is Cheato?

Cheato is a form of Macroalgae its to help control Nitrates. Fish wont eat it, pods breed in it and its a fast grower.
