Ok for all of you have not heard of this very popular mod, essentially what it is is that you're taking a standard powerhead like a Maxijet, swapped out the impeller head for a toy RC boat propeller to generate tons of very wide and dispursed flow. Kinda like a Tunze or a SEIO .... Although IMO the perfromance is more Tunze-like than SEIO.
For $5-$20 in materials you too can do this.
Because there's already a very extensive thread available on ReefCentral.com on this mod, I'll go ahead and link to it but shoot me any questions you might have and I'll see if I can help.
You can now get all the materials you need for this mod, even precut shrouds, etc... There's even more instruction popsted on this web site as well. http://mjmods.com
I have a 55g mixed SPS dominated tank and all I have for flow are 2 moddded MJ400's. Plenty of flow for my tank and my SPS corals are all happy. The tank has never been better ever since I put these mods in August of 2005.
thanks D
i was following this thread for a while, but havent checked on it in a few months.

Yeah, currently I only have a few softies for corals. But I will keep track of this and maybe even play with it one day....because one day, I will get a larger tank.
thanks for posting those links and starting the thread...will help if locating it again in the future.

i did not know that this was a common thing done. i have done it myself and the hobby store guy thought i was wierd. i also cut the exit nozzle off and bored out internal diameter.
i agree...
i have never done this mod, but will look into it more and see if i can pull it off..
Whatever... I'm already a believer that there's nothing reef-related that you couldn't pull off. You da man...
This would be an awesome vidcast. I was watching that thread a while ago, I had forgotten about it. I wouldn't mind seing one on a DIY Calcium reactor like the "dj88 design" found here: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showth...5&pagenumber=1 But that is quite a bit more involved, maybe a multi-part vidcast.
So has anyone else here tried this yet? I just finished my first one last night, well, actually my second. The first one kinda broke in the process (kind of a funny thing, as it turns out, if you turn pvc on a lathe and it catches, boy does it really go flying...)
It actually works really well. I need to re-arrange my reefscape a little before I leave it in there. It was moving water pretty good, blowing some stuff around. And that's a MJ 900, with a single Octura boat prop.
How do you figure the $35?? If you watch on eBay, you can get two 900's for $30 plus shipping. The props are about $1.50@. And I paid about $6 for the carbon fiber rod (but that is because the hobby store by me only sells packs of two 24 inch sections.) The vinyl air line and hard air line, I already had.
I'm debating on putting two of them on a wavemaker. The only issue there is, when you power them off and on, sometimes they switch direction. If you do the stop right, it just clicks for a second and switches back. I haven't decided if the occasional clicking, is gonna bother me or not.
I still need to do the second one, and I'll probably re-do the first to make it look purdy...
i used itunes to grab those shows, 9/10 doesn't work for me, it cant play the movie file in quick time movie format for some reason. how are u guys capturing these shows?
