Advice on starting a Frag Tank

Hi

I would like to start a frag tank but do not know how to start or what size tank is best to start with. I have tried search through all the great info on site here and truly appreciate the learning experience.

Could someone please advise the best size tank, lights etc for a start up frag tank. What would be the ideal location within my home i.ie, away from a window etc.. and also where is the best place to get the racks etc?

cheers

Denise

all of your questions will be answered by one question ...

what type of corals are we talking about fragging ?? soft coral and LPS ... will be forgiving of each other and can share a tank.

SPS, IMHO, need to be kept in a separate system.

what size tank ... as shallow as you can find, usually something like a 40breeder works for everyone.
lighting ... depends on what you are going to be cutting on. i would use what ever you have on the display tank that they will be coming from. keep away from windows, windows in most cases = algae blooms.
racks ... you can get the racks at home depot or lowes in the lighting department. it is called florescent light diffuser. it is about $10 per 4x2 sheet here and you can cut it to you desired size with a pair of side cutters.

Hi Bobby

Thank you very much. I daresay it would be soft corals and LPS so they can share a tank, I am space limited. I will research some more and come back with questions.

cheers
Denise

Hi Denise and to TR.

(Bobby will never catch up with me. )

For softies and many LPS you would be OK with T5 lights.

Thanks Carmie

Unfortunately due to space issues and a lack of time I have to put off my frag tank project however HUGE kudos to Bobby for his video and post about fragging zoanthids. I tried this on the weekend and was successful so now I have some in both tanks.

cheers
