fragging mushrooms

I thought I saw a video somewhere on this site that showed how to frag mushrooms. I bought mushrooms from my lfs, problem is they are attached to a huge rock and I want to take them off and distribute them among my other rocks and take the one they gave me out.

I don't recall if there was a video or not, but they're realy easy to move or frag. All you need is a container with enough rubble to cover the bottom. I use a tupperware container, but you can use anything of appropriate size. Just fill the container with the rubble and some tank water. take the rock with the mushrooms out of the tank and slice the mushrooms off with a razor. Toss the mushrooms in the tray with the rubble and place it in a low flow area of the tank, so they don't get blown out of the container. After a few days, they'll attach to the rubble and you can place them wherever you like.

I have heard that you can cut a mushroom or ricordia into 4 or more peices pizza style and they will grow into frags. You mount them in the way phurst described.

Yep, you sure can. As long as you cut through the mouth, you can cut it up like a pizza. Of course they'll spread pretty well on their own

Well, in order to cut them up, you have to cut them off the rock anyway, so it's just one extra step to frag them

I cut a mushroom off a rock last night. I cut horizontally at the base (under the "hood"). All these white squigglies came out. were these the shrooms "guts"??

Sounds like it's gut. I'm not sure the cap will survive (though It may well), but I'll bet the foot you left on the rock will grow a new cap shortly.

DOH The foot spawned like 5 babies last week, so I figured I would exsperiment with the main cap.

docthompson offered me this link to a great Eric Borneman Video video where he frags a variety of corals for a reef club. He covers Corallimorphs, discussing mounting options and fragging methods. I believe he says that a single mushroom can be fragged into as much as 32 pieces! Great vid.
