    Amphibious' Rock Stands

This is how I do the PVC stands. I'm not done aquascaping and the tank is a mess from sand clouds but now is the time to see the PVC stands.

The PVC rock stands are very noticeable here. I cut them 5.5" long for a 5" DSB. Sand is still being added and LS will be added later.

I went with 2" PVC this time and 1" holes in the stands as shown, one on top and two at the bottom. I have more to make tomorrow and will take a pic of them before they go in the tank. Two reasons for the holes, one, the stands will be filled with sand and the holes in the bottom allow DSB worms to crawl into and out of the deeper layer. Remember, my method of raising the rock above the sand is to eliminate the inevitable dead area with the rock directly on the sand. I don't want to create dead spots in the pipe stands. Second, the upper hole, usually only one, besides being there for water flow, is for safety hideouts for little fish like blennies, gobies and such. Besides the rock holes and crevasses they can choose these little nooks. This is just an easy way to provide many hide-a-ways for them to fight over. They're very agressive at defending their home.

Something that is outlawed and hopefully she gets caught. V, some of the pictures you get are very shocking and disturbing at the same time. But I just have this one question were you the one behind that camera. I am sure you were. LOL

This thread is about rock stands NOT rock stars. Only V can find the most audacious pictures and have the audacity to post them. That guy would be run out of my shed on his rump, literally. V, you posted a much different pic in another thread that Would be more likely found in my quarters.

      Hi Dick,
A few more pictures of the stands and how you did it would be great for someone like me who is just starting.

I love your idea fro rock stands dick, I am currently using them for the start up of my tank. Oh and thanks for the calcium I ordered from you as well

Phil i used my chop saw to cut the pipe and then used a paddle bit on my drill press for the holes, then used a dremel to make them nice and round

      Thanks again Dick,
      Bob

I can’t remember where I first got the idea. Doubt if it was an original from my brain. I’ve been using them since the mid ‘90s. They are meant to hold the LR up off the LSB to allow water to flow under the LR and keep the DSB aerobically fresh. What happens without them is the area where the LR sits on the sand becomes stagnant. The DSB’s activity is extended indefinitely utilizing the stands.

If you are going to have a 4” DSB you would want the pipe cut to a length of 5” or a bit more. Those in the picture are 5”. The pipe is 1 1/2” and I drilled 1” holes to allow water flow through them and was thinking small fish would use them for hiding. That didn’t happen. Next time I’m using 2” pipe and fashioning the holes a bit different. I’ll start a thread on those when a start the build.

I’m in the beginning stage of figuring out the piping the piping schematic in the aquaculture building. Plus I’m doing a 220 reef in there.

    Help with Return pump.

just to chime in, if you're running a DSB, the last thing you want to do is disturb it, not to mention that "sand sifters" will strip the sandbed of the beneficial fauna you're trying to promote.

What the heck is going on!?

"Had the water tested".... I assume you do not have a test kit. Things can change rapidly in such a small volume of water. If you dont have one, it should be your next purchase. And I strongly... Go to last post
