for the first time since i have gotten her, my ocellaris, clover , has started to show her dominance in the tank....she will go over the where the firefish are staying and nudge them....she has grown quite a bit, but is still a small fish
would now be a good time to introduce a mate to her?....i don't want to wait too long, as i am afraid she will harrass the other clown too much if she is too dominant.....right now, she is being gentle, but is asserting herself
hang-on, lost it there for a min, these change sex based on hierarchy. im not sure if adding a bigger would help. females tend to grow bigger anyways. your clown is asserting he presence. and u want to add another thats smaller. try and see, as long as u have space for them to sort out any clash at the start they should sort themselves out. they could hit it off straight off, or take some time to pair. u have anems in your tank? if u have only one, maybe add another that the clown u buy is in, that way they are compatable fom the start.
tomato's are my clown of choice, so i haven/t kept this species. i know a few other here have them, proberbly best from the horses mouth
most Amphiprion spp. are the same in this, and you can pretty much add any juvenile or male clown to the tank.. they will fight, and settle there dominance issues but will almost always work it out.
the catch is you cant add a female if you already have a female, as that will be problematic.
Veriann is right when he says they change sexes, they are hermaphrodites.
but they are what's called Protandrous hermaphrodites. in that they go juveniles-to-male-to-female.. in that order, and wont do backwards. so if you add two females, one will NOT change to male.
your safest bet is to find a good small fish, that way you have the best change of getting a juvenile..

yes, i knew they changes sex......clover could still be a male, but i want her to be the female
i will look for a teeny juv......hopefully she won't harrass him too much or i'll be freaking out.....probably be worse if i wait for her to get even bigger
thanks guys
oh....veriann, no i don't have an anemone....i would love to buy a clown w/ it's anemone, but i want a mandarin & read that mandarins and anemones don't mix well....and i am far from ready for anything like an anemone
Yup definitely introduce another clown now and let them mate when they are young. Good decision on the anemone- I've never had one and I can always talk myself out of adding one to the tank.

gwen_o_lyn, why do you talk yourself out of it? nothing is more beautiful than an clownfish (or even better, a pair) in an anenome.

anemones are great, and with a mature tank they do quite well... they really arent a hard mystical creature.. just need a bit of education just like everything else.
i do wish i had it in another tank, i have realized they need alot of real-estate, and thats valuable in a reef tank.. lol
i always thing.. man all the frags i could put in that corner...lol

i love the anem and clown combo, as much as i like the other catag. corals, im a sucker for swaying corals, amems are easy as to keep given the right amount of liquid love. its a no brainer for me when keeping this combo, because they are my test kit. one look at ether the clown or the anems, and they tell me the status of the tank! ive even kept them with my partners picassio trigger very successfully for years.
mind you the trigger does test if the amen has weaknesses from time to time. a quick reality check with a sting is enough to jog his memory for awhile..lol
yes, i know...i love anemones...when i go to the LFS and i see the cowns cuddling up it so darn tempting, nothing like it.......but i really want a mandarin.....read that they are quite slow moving little guys and end up being anemone food, all too often
i am going to try and see if the clowns will host a toadstool.....if that doesn't work, then i will resaerch and find another coral to try
I don't know if you've mentioned the size of your tank but one must allow room for an anemone to expand. Anemones are about 90% water and have the ability to expand there dimensions simply by taking in more water. It seems when they are comfortable with their surroundings they expand to take full advantage of the light source, I believe. Speaking of lights, Anemones require very bright light. Take that into consideration, too. PCs minimum, the newer T5s or even MHs.
Given the wonderful experience I've had over the years with Clown fish and host Anemones, if provided the right living quarters and conditions they do fine. Having a clown host in a toadstool is nothing in comparison.
As far as a Manderin stumbling into an Anemone, that would be a rare occurrence and one to morn but it would have to be a retarded Mandarin. They know to stay away. The requirements of the Manderin are such that you'd better be prepared to provide a ready supply of live pods. There are suppliers of live pods out there. If anyone is interested I could provide an e-link to a supplier. I receive no remuneration from them.
Good luck with your decision.
