This one left me with a few questions though. I'd love to hear, in a little more depth, how the system works, what each step in the system does, what each of the different phases are for, and why aren't calcium supplements needed? great questions Jimm, i want to compile everyones questions to do a follow up show
so every one ask your questions here..
so we can do another show with them.. :) veriann 05-19-2006, 02:35 AM i had written up a couple of questions, but i have read up first hand from the site & they have kinda been answered. i do have a better understanding overall now

there are still some questions im going to ask, just not the ones i originally posted veriann 05-19-2006, 02:38 AM also looking forward to the plumbing & fuge projects in the future rob! it might be alittle strange, but can take your vidcam to the hardware store and lay connections on a table & exlain different connections/valves/ bulkheads/ect ect kj_yoda 05-19-2006, 10:44 AM Very cool podcast. makes me want to try it... who knows, something to research ZeroKoolNYC 05-19-2006, 12:29 PM I think I may just get one. My corals will be happy :-) the real servo 05-19-2006, 07:22 PM I have been mulling over using Zeovit for about the past year. I HATE the fact that they leave you in the dark and won't let the cat out of the bag to tell you what is in their media. I have 2 friends who are my local Guinea pigs. Eric Borneman was supposed to lecture on the different filter systems and media at IMAC. I was hoping to hear him mention Zeovit, but he changed the topic of the lecture. Maybe for MACNA there will be a good lecture based on some sort of science. As an owner of a SPS dominent tank, I would love to truely know why this system allows for incredible manifestation of colors.
What is the chemistry?
FWIW, I have seen the same coral in 4 different tanks and have it display 4 different colors with the same Kelvin bulb (different ballasts) and relative equal chemistry parameters.
I know alot of people that believe that Zeovit is just a brillant marketing scheme. I'll wait for the science before I jump on the antecdotal bandwagon. veriann 05-19-2006, 10:11 PM yep, im kinda of the same opinion at this point, i do understand anything chemisty thats made known is public domain, but seriosly it only takes one lab coat to invest enough time to break each component down, i cant blame them for trying to make as much money for the designs as they can before its is public property.
from what i have read already it looks sound, & i can totally understand the principle of nutrient limitation. the add ons are designed to work as a total program. im going to keep in mind the 5 W's & make my dec after a case study has provided these.
who, what, when where, why? I also read somewhere that it's not compatable with typical refugiums (ie with macroalgae, etc). Is that true and why not?
And just what IS a zeolite? We're geeks, we want to know. fat walrus 05-20-2006, 11:34 PM I also read somewhere that it's not compatable with typical refugiums (ie with macroalgae, etc). Is that true and why not?
And just what IS a zeolite? We're geeks, we want to know.
if we use a refugium to help control nutrients, and the zeovit system si to maintain a low nurtient system, then is it possible that a refugium would be starved? if you zeovit system is to control all the nitrogen compounds form beginning to end, it would seem that it would be denied to the macroalgae completely. but i'll wait for a smarter person to explain this to me.
zeolite is a clay. it is the basic compound of most cat litters. it has always been available as a ammonia absorbant for freshwater aquariums. some salt water nitrate sponge also contains zeolite. i think it is primarily silica and aluminum oxide. trythechi 05-21-2006, 02:46 AM Hi there
I run a Hybrid system - following the 'Iwan Method'.
Attached is a quick reference guide used for information over on RC.
The Zeo Basic 4 and Prodibio elements are interchangable to some extent (although I havent tried ZB4 yet to evaluate IME), so in a full zeo run system, ZB4 would be used instead of Prodibio in the nutrient reduction section of the quick reference document.
If you'v not seen Iwan's tank yet - check it out!! Rob may want to interview Iwan for a Podcast:cool: And if we get a TOTM here - Iwans would be TOTdecade.

Simon Reefbaby 05-21-2006, 04:07 PM Having Iwan for an interview would be great...I could step in as translator! :-) G'day,
Great introduction to zeovit. I have not used any of these products yet, but those that have seem to be raving about it, and tank photos seem to back up their experiences.
Of course, I have been told many times that you should probably not dose things into your tank which you can't measure with a test kit. I presume that since we don't know what some of these things are exactly, then measuring them may be a bit difficult.
IWAN's tank is unbelievable. You need a serious set of sunglasses to look at his tank shots. It would be awesome if you could arrange an interview with him.

herm scottw 05-22-2006, 10:46 AM We would love to do a follow up. Put something together for us and we can make it happen. :D.
Thanks again for allowing us to talk some with Jake, we had a good time.
scott Reefbaby 05-22-2006, 01:36 PM hey guys - if you would like some more information about the individual components, then check out this website (http://www.korallen-zucht.de/Englisch.21.0.html). I find that the zeovit.com website doesn't really talk about the system as a whole.... Reefbaby 05-22-2006, 01:37 PM and here's (http://www.korallen-zucht.de/fileadmin/user_upload/pdfs/Dosing_English.pdf) a protocol for dosing...explains a little more as well... trythechi 05-22-2006, 01:39 PM Thats the German manufacturers web site, I find it has helpful info not always covered by zeovit.com - which is also a great site.
Cheers
Simon Reefbaby 05-22-2006, 01:41 PM yeah...here's (http://www.wetwebmedia.com/ca/cav1i3/zeovit/Zeovit_system/zeovit.htm) another interesting article trythechi 05-22-2006, 07:32 PM Of course, I have been told many times that you should probably not dose things into your tank which you can't measure with a test kit. Hi Herm
I read plenty of times that people dont like the zeo system because they wont disclose contents of some of the elements and I understand the reason they wont disclose is to project Mr Phols intelectual copyright - fair enough I guess.
The approach I take is that if there is visual proof that something works then - thats good enough for me - but both the full zeo and hybrid methods do need to be studied and implemented slowly. Theres no doubt in my mind that zeo is very effective from all I'v seen, and I use Iwan's hybrid method because he has THE most stunning tank, and the prodi element is simpler to use. Alexander G who runs the full zeo system is also stunning. Both Iwan and Alexander have caused quite a stir in the english speaking world:)
Having said that - I'm just about to trial the zb4 element for 6 months to see if I'm missing out on anything, specifically the bac strains and food (which I doubt will make a difference - but I could be wrong - infact I'll be happy if I am) and the effect of daily release of the mulm. I'll report back if there is an improvemnt over the prodi elements or not in due course.
I havent had much of a steer from experienced english speaking zeo users as to the benefits of using zeolites to take out NH3 compared with letting the bacs do all the work right the way down the chain - so I'll have to judge it from direct experience of both.
One person who has gone from zb4 to prodi hasnt noticed much of a difference and another prefered zb4 to prodi.
Cheers
Simon veriann 06-01-2006, 03:29 AM just been doing the rounds on the info, interested im the opinions on this subject because results show success, but there is stil alot of darkness surounding the subject. the following is the quoted view from Anthony Calfo
I have seen more than a few "zeo-tanks" in the US now as well as many throughought Europe (in Germany, Italy and Spain) and there are some commonalities to speak of.
IMO:
"Zeo-stragegy" is overall sound (albeit risky - see below) husbandry and can work with very good results when strictly adhered to.
It is not for the casual or poorly funded aquarist
It is very much for the Acroporid specialist (be sure you fit this description... see below)
It is "risky" in the sense that it aggressively manages nutrients to the extent that corals are walking a fine line of "colorful evident FPs and not overly fertilized zoox." That can (and obviously does vis a vis the reef and some beautiful Zeo-tanksin kind) work well for nearly fully autotrophic species (a corrupt generalization here... but meaning species that are mostly photosynethtic and not heavy organismal feeders) in tanks with decent fish loads (namely Acro displays)... but with any sudden change in nutrient levels or on systems with "hungrier" corals (less nearly autotrophic corals as most all we keep are other than Acros, Xenia, eg)... it can be dangerous.
And finally... it is not for casual intermediate aquarists or beginners at all because of the discipline required to apply it, the knowledge required to understand and finesse it... and the very focus (Acroporid displays) of its intended use (IMO) which preclude beginners necessarily (we do not recommend Acroporid tanks for most newbies).
Zeovit strategy is but one of the many successful ways to run a reef tank. And if you fit the above criterion, then you may well be suited for it.
.
Anthony Calfo veriann 06-01-2006, 03:33 AM ive still got some research to do on zeolites as well trythechi 06-01-2006, 05:11 PM Calfco's summarry is spot on - thanks. george1098 06-24-2006, 08:54 AM where can I buy zeovite? veriann 06-24-2006, 09:44 AM where can I buy zeovite?
