Hi guys. Im a newbie and have been doing a lot of reading. I think I know what Im going to get as far as equipoment goes but want some opinions from the experts. Im getting a perfecto 125 gallon reef tank with 2 corner overflows. Im thinking an ADHI refugium 45 and a reef octopus NWB 200 protein skimmer. As far as a pump goes I think an eheim 1260. Someone told me I need 2 pumps but Im not sure why. Is it because there are two overflow boxes? I have no idea how to hook any of this up. Im hoping it all comes with detailed instructions on how to plumb it. For lighting I'm thinking the Coralife Aqualight pro. This all adds up to a pretty penny so I want to make sure its a good set up. I hear all the time not to skimp on this part because it makes all the difference down the road. Let me know.
Thanks

You have a nice size tank that would be appropriate for tangs. I think that beginning with a fuge is a good idea. You could probably save $$ by making your own sump/fuge out of an aquarium. What kind of corals do you want? I think you may be happier with 250 watt lights even if right now you want lower light corals.

ok, so ive brought your equipment here, just so we know what we're looking at. ok so your using the fuge tank as a sump & fuge only yeah? , or does it come with its one sump. ?

The tank has two overflows, if they flow into the same network system below your tank your fine, you can ether let them drain into the same tank, join two tanks together at the same hight if you have two, or if your only dumping into this one as pictured above, no problem at all. So yeah, one return pump is all thats needed. The skimmer comes with its own pump im assuming.

Plumbing we can help you with k now worries bud

Hey Brad,

Welcome to TR. Congratulations on doing your homework BEFORE setting up, or even buying the equipment. Doing it ”the right way" will save you many heartaches and money. I wish ALL Newbies would find a forum and ask questions before getting started.

Congratulations, too, on selecting a great size aquarium and associated equipment.

Here is a link to my 135 reef build thread - Amphibious’ 135 build thread (http://www.talkingreef.com/forums/member-tank-projects/412-amphibious-135-gal-reef.html)

It has gotten great peer review here on TR as a “must read”. Not sure about that but it will take you through a similar tank as you are getting. You should get some new ideas to bring questions here or PM me.

Another peer reviewed article given high marks my article about buying healthy fish and keeping them healthy - Nine simple Rules (http://theculturedreef.com/nine-rules.htm)

In it you are going to be introduced, perhaps for the first time, to the concept of quarantining ALL new fish purchased for your reef aquarium. Please take quarantining seriously. It will save you tons of money and heartache. Plus, it’s part of doing it ”the right way" thing.

Happy reefing.

Ok, I have read about haldf of Dick's thread so far. Some GREAT stuff there but I think now Im more scared then ever. I have been keeping freshwater since I was a kid. I love cichlids. I thought I was hi-tech when I got my first eheim pro canister filter lol. Looking at the pic of Dick's tank and all that plumbing looks complicated. I guess in my head I just pictured two hoses going into the sump and on coming out and then splitting to two. I wish I had a neighbor that was into reef tanks!

Brad, I neglected to say :welcome: to TR!

Dick's thread is great and will help you loads! I know just what you mean about the plumbing. When I got my tank I looked at all those PARTS and my eyes glazed over. I took :pics: of everything and the folks here got me straight!

You are fortunate to have MARSHReef.com (http://www.marshreef.com/) in your area. I would definitely join the club and make it to the meetings. You may find that someone right in your area is in the club and would be willing to give you a hand. You will also get a discount at many LFS with your membership card.

Hello Brad and welcome to the world of reefs- if there was one thing that sticks out for you to never do- do not use tap water. This will mean that either you buy lots of 5 gallon containers to haul water or better yet a RO/DI system. This will keep the unwanted nutrients such as phosphate to a minimum.

You will save lots of money if you buy your own system!
