View Full Version : Very Good Article - Hobbyists Helping... JustDavidP 05-15-2006, 08:42 AM This is a well written, yet overly dramatic article about "helping others in the hobby". It's actually "right on". Something to keep in mind when offering advice to others.

I think I am more the "your wife's an idiot" type
I have a lot to think about!
Cycle ur freakin tank for 12 weeks or I'll beat you upside the head!! ha ha ha!! BrianPlankis 06-14-2006, 10:17 AM Thanks for the comments everyone! I tried to use Bob and Frank to interject a little humor into what can be a dry topic :)
I am going to be working with Rob on a podcast on this topic and a few related ideas. Not sure when we'll do it, but we are working on it.
So does anyone here think i left anything important out of the article? I always enjoy discussing my articles and learning how to improve them.
Brian veriann 06-14-2006, 11:40 AM brian, welcome to TR. read the article, skipped it first time round, glad i went back to read it. some noble points were made!
“I’ll teach you to call my wife an idiot, you, you, you idiot!!
& a touch of humor does make the topic reach further!
somethimes i forget about the "lurkers" as its called, but when im not looking thought threads i hop on the "who's online" section of our site. here it updates every min or so,& i see how many are behind the curtain without a name tag!
very valid point here to be learnt JustDavidP 06-21-2006, 03:38 PM Brian... Did you join TR before or after I posted this post? I'd have been much more complimentary had I known we had your eyes on us :) Just kiddin. Welcome to TR and looking forward to everything you can do to help us make this a better place for the average hobbyist.

Dave,
HAHA :) No worries, I was TRYING to be OVERLY dramatic. :D Something I read in a journal article somewhere about students remembering lessons much longer if it was done dramatically.
I was on here before you posted this thread, but I don't get to visit here as often as I would like as it feels like I'm constantly writing hobbyist articles lately. I do hope to make this website more of a regular stop and help out where I can in the future. It feels like a good group fo people here.
Brian JustDavidP 06-21-2006, 03:53 PM Brian,
Please do find some time. This is a great group of people and we are ALL hungry like a sponge for more information. Just look at our little community as a "living article" for the hobbyist :)
PS.. I too am getting into the "writing" end of things. Steven Pro just proof read an article for me and has helped me a lot. I've not had to do anything like this since earning my degree. It's been an amazing "re-awakening".
Dave CarmieJo 06-21-2006, 09:55 PM Dave, that is so cool! fat walrus 06-21-2006, 10:56 PM why you....i'll teach you to teach me about teaching an idiot.....you idiot! BrianPlankis 06-21-2006, 11:11 PM why you....i'll teach you to teach me about teaching an idiot.....you idiot!
Well....you you you....bad mean person! I'm going to kick your.....hind side! :D
B. JustDavidP 06-22-2006, 08:10 AM :) Even cooler if I get off my butt (and off of baseball season) and finish the article :) BrianPlankis 06-22-2006, 08:21 AM Brian,

Dave,
Yes, I find these articles tremendously rewarding because I learn so many things from the "experts". How cool is it to have Steven Pro and Eric Borneman, etc. review your articles and spend time on something YOU wrote :D
On another related note, I'm going to the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences today to look at their snail shell collection and meet with their head of Malacology to help me ID some of my snails. This is the nerd equivalent of meeting Sammy Sosa or Peyton Manning in the sports world and spending an hour with them just chatting.
What is your article about?
Brian
PS. Yes I'm a nerd and my wife thinks it is cool :D JustDavidP 06-22-2006, 08:39 AM What is your article about?
What else ;)

Dave BrianPlankis 06-22-2006, 08:41 AM Nice Dave! Seahorses might be in my future once I move to a bigger house, it will be nice to have your article as a resource.
