View Full Version : Cycling - Podcast Episode 50 We Made It!!
Here we are at Episode 50
In this show i give you a bit of an idea where Talkingreef started at and how we have grown, but the main show topic is on cycling. I know i have covered this in many other shows, but here i actually go into the details of what you are doing and why. It is more targeted at new hobbyists, but im sure there is something for everyone. The idea here is that its important to know what to do, but even more important to know why you are doing it

I agree with Gwen...very cool intro from down under! ...gotta love that accent. Scott 05-12-2006, 12:03 AM One note about using newspaper to clean your tank glass. You may want to wear gloves...as the ink from the newspaper may end up all over your hands. Sometimes it won't, but it may.....so just be aware of that. CarmieJo 05-12-2006, 12:28 AM I usually get ink on my hands. However, our local paper uses soy based ink it washes right off, doesn't stain and doesn't seem to irritate my hands. cheng21tang 05-12-2006, 02:09 AM yay! 50 podcast. crazy nuts. i wonder later on down the road will we still be using this forum like let's say 2 years from now. like i always see the same names posting and we know each other by first name now. i wonder how it will be when we get to let's say podcast 150. i love this forum! Congratulations on your 50th show!
With respect to "cycling the tank". I like to talk in terms of "establishing a cycle in the tank". So for example
"After your tank has finished cycling..." becomes "After you have established a cycle in your tank..."
This is my first post here, so I just wanted to say hi to everyone and let you know that I enjoy listening to your show.
Keep up the great work!
Regards,

as i mentioned, "finishing your cycle" is a very inaccurate term, but i havent been able to find the right words.. "establishing your cycle" is great...

Welcome to TR. Great idea on "establishing a cycle". dreams 05-12-2006, 09:48 PM congrats!...and love the aussie addition:-) rmulet 05-13-2006, 03:52 PM 50 shows and growing stronger! I like the way this one was put together too.
Think about it, the show is like a reef tank too! It went through it's cycle, got some brown algae outbreaks (the sound quality in the beginning), added some clean up crews (fixed the titles on the podcasts), corraline algae established itself (the people subscribing to the show), corals and fish added (sponsers), testing regularly (community updates). I'd say your well established!!!!
Here's to another 50!
Ralph i wouldn't say "well established" just yet ;), but i love the analogy, and the appreciation...
thanks everyone... G'day,
I figured that I should probably own up to the fact that I am the "Aussie" with the accent. Thanks for your warm welcome. :D
Cheers,

Hi Veriann,
I take it that you are a Queenslander who has migrated south to Melboune? For those that are interested, origin, is The Rugby League State of Origin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_League_State_of_Origin) and is a fiercely fought Rugby contest, played over three games, between two eastern Australian states, Queensland vs New South Wales.
May the best team win, but I would like to point out that New South Wales has won the last 3 years...
Regards,
Herman veriann 05-22-2006, 12:55 AM yes herm, a mexican for sure these days. going on 7 years now, & i might add without pay tv rugby is shown at 2am . it drive me nuts.
the blues have had good a run as of late, considering we lost some big gunns on both sides, its been pretty even, tipical brisbane style though, when we do lose, we lose big, but its also the reverse when enoughs enough. i dont think we like the overall champ points in your favour as of last year, so its going to be a great battle. i think RB is up with our game, she has friends in our corner of the gobe. Reefbaby 05-22-2006, 05:04 AM i think RB is up with our game, she has friends in our corner of the gobe.
yeah...as long as you don't start talking about cricket! :-) veriann 05-22-2006, 07:04 AM sheesh, cut me alittle slack RB , cricket is popular here, but i find it soooooooo boring! u will never hear that word come out of my mouth, thats unless its indoor cricket, which is fast & fun dwillingm 05-23-2006, 09:23 AM Has anyone tried the newspaper cleaning method on an acrylic tank? I dont think scratching would be an issue with the newspaper, but how dilute does the vinegar solution need to be to not haze the acrylic? interesting, i have not tried this, but im imagining a standard 25% mix would be ok..
lets see if others have comments. gwen_o_lyn 06-03-2006, 04:08 PM http://www.petsmart.com/global/articles/article_detail.jsp?CONTENT%3C%3Ecnt_id=10134198673 267337&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=9852723696503987&N=229
Check out the 2nd to last paragraph. dwillingm 06-03-2006, 06:30 PM thanks gwen. I actually tried the 25% vinegar on a corner spot on the cover of my acrylic to see what would happen, and it was fine. the solution cleans very well. i am not too sure about the newspaper though, it didnt seem to absorb the cleaner very well, it just spread it around alot. i found that a paper towel was easier. gwen_o_lyn 06-03-2006, 06:46 PM i think with acrylic, I'd feel safer using a paper towel or old 100% cotton t-shirt.
But then again, everyone says go ahead and put that first scratch in it and get it over with! :P dwillingm 06-03-2006, 08:52 PM yeah, that was another thing, even though the newspaper seems pretty soft, I had an uneasy feeling about rubbing it against the acrylic. At least with acrylic scratches, you can usually buff them out.
i love the clarity of acrylic, but it is so hard to take care of. My next tank is going to be a starphire. CarmieJo 06-03-2006, 09:11 PM The newspaper is not as absorbent as a paper towel but I think this is part of the reason it shines so well. The trick is to use the minimum amount of liquid and then just keep rubbing until the tank is dry.
BTW, I don't know if it will scratch the acrylic or not. |
