These were going on simultaneously in my tank (aka the Thunder Dome) today. I couldn't resist posting some pics.

Round 1: Nassarius vs. different kind of Nassarius

Round 2: Margarita vs. Bumblebee (took the picture as the BB was running away)

Must be something in the air (or water!) My blue-leg hermits were mixing it up yesterday!

WTF?

The nassarius that was engulfed in the first pic is now an empty shell. I think he was already dying but getting slurped up by your cousin is a hell of a way to go.

I googled whelk snails and it sounds like they don't dig in the sand like the nass. These guys are/were both diggers for sure.

The one on the left ate the one on the right. There was just an empty shell left over after this. I'm pretty sure the one that got eaten was already dying. I thought he was dead and I was about to take him out of the tank a few days ago, but he moved a little when I picked him up so I put him back in.

Ilyanassa obsoleta which are welks bury themselves. They are sometimes sold on eBay as reef safe snails or even as nassarius. They don't eat corals but they will eat up all the micro critters in your sand bed. They are also an intermediate host for a fluke.

You guys were right. That killer snail is a Babylonia Whelk. Scroll down to the whelk section on this page: Indo Pacific Snails (http://www.chucksaddiction.com/Hitchsnails.html) Should I try to return them to the lfs? I have 3. I think if they won't take them back then I'm done with that store.

yea I would take them back to the store. Or if you have a sump you could put them in there. :)

You can't beat Chuck's guides! I would take it back to the store. IMO you don't want it in your tank.
