I have a finger attached to a rock that is infested with aptasia. I want to remove the finger and attach him to a different rock. I know how to attach him to the new one, but how do I get him to release his grip on the infested rock?

Sorry to hear about your difficulties with the nems. Unfortunately you can not get a leather "to release" himself from anything. They are not like nems with a "foot." If all the problem is, the pest nems, you can purchase Jo's Juice or Aiptasia X to kill the nems and solve your problem. If you try to "remove" the leather from the rock, you will damage him greatly as he is "grown" to the rock.
Ps- Out of curiosity..... couldn't see too clearly. What is the fish, sort of looks like a leopard grouper or sweet lips?

I have Jo's juice and used it regularly. But that only removes the aptasia when they are visible. I have removed all rock from the tank recently and I am going to go to a FO tank due to the probs with aptasia. But I had to leave the rock with the finger in there to keep him alive, obviously. Hence you see not rock in the background.
I have read that you can cut "fingers" of the coral and place them on diff rocks. Can I cut him near the base and have him reattach to a new "clean" rock?
P.S. the fish is a Panther Grouper.

Quite understandable as I have had my trials with the dreaded nems.

You are correct as I've never seen a coral thrive w/o water. :D I did notice the lack of LR so assumed your specimen was a new purchase for a newly cycled system.

Below is a link to a video for fragging a toadstool. Not the same softy, but the technique can be applied to the FL.

Thanks! He is beautiful and I know you are excited about watching him grow to maturity. They are amazing as they get rather large and can grow very fast. :)
Many hobbiest have encountered aiptasia and some rid their tank easily of the pests, while others seem to fight an uphill battle. I, myself am slowly overcoming them and am now winning the battle, so I know your frustration. The problem with treating/applying products to effectively kill the nems, is that sometimes we do not effectively apply the solutions. If the disks are not completely covered, they will release their planula populating the tank with new larva. Have you tried Aiptasia X? For me, that product gave me the edge over to win the battle.
