welcome skippyreef. i myself have been onboard just a couple of weeks and i love it. i've been a hobbyist since the time when one only dreamed of keeping a reef tank and have never found a forum group i ever wanted to participate in. this is the first site and the last site.

Thanks for the Welcome,

Just finished the Zooxanthallae podcast. Great information.

This is a shot of the system I am setting up right now. Think a month to six weeks until it has salt water running in it. Just emptied it today after a two month wet test and ceramic soaking.

Thanks all,

I am looking forward to gertting an IPod now (I can finally justify it as a reefing expense  ) so it will make listening to these easier in the car and when I mow my lawn LOL

Patience was the cheapest piece of equipment so to speak and it will pay dividends later on I think. I think by months end the aquarium will be on line with salt water.

Jake Adams did during his talk at IMAC. He gave a talk on water flow and its affects on photosynthesis. During the talk he mentioned this site. He also had mentioned it the night before the conference officially started during a conversation about zooxanthallae and their diversity. Interstingly enough ;) there happens to be a great pod cast on that very subject LOL.

I hope that this talk (IMAC talk) is something he will podcast and share becuase it was good.

I am searching the podcast for things on lighting in terms of mmols tolerance until photosynthesis falls off and the corals become stressed. I am ordering an Apogee Instruments light meter to measure the different areas of my tank with my lighiting at different heights. This will give me a map of light so to speak and I hope will help me better place corals and understand what is happening.

I re-aquascaped it and like this better. This is the final look. The sand is in (fiji pink) and is about 1.5-2 inches deep. The full sand bed is exposed as well. The reef ceramic rock is flat on thebottom and is seated in direct contact with the aquarium bottom. The wall plates are flush to the back and side. The Tunze 6100's are in place as is the wave box.

I ordered these Reef Ceramics from www.captiveoceans.com along with the Zeovit system and Red Dragon Pump. Great Service!!!!

My Schuran is installed now and I filled that with Media. When my friend receives his PVC pipe bender we will plumb the tank.

The lighting meter is a quantum meter. It is made by Apogee Instruments. It measures PPF and gives a good indication of the intensity millimols of light that are being delivered to the reef. Mine should be here anyday. It cost me 260.00 shipped. I ordered it direct from them (Apogee)

That is a wave box on the left side and twin 6100's on the sides of the overflows. The return is a Red Dragon Pump.

I will post a close up of the sump I guess too :)

I also changed the aquascaping around with the reef ceramics. I like the new look better it gives more room for my favorite corals (and pivotal species) to grow..... Table Top Acropora.

I have bought stuff over a period of time and that eased the financial burden a bit. My Father In LAw and I finished the lower level on our own save the carpeting which I paid to have installed :)

My LFS is very good to me as well. They have been great with getting me the sump and tank.

Skippy - looks fantastic!

I just have one comment....have you used the ceramic rock work before as a back plate? I started my first tank with the back plates. In theory, I think it's a cool idea, but I just wanted to share my experience with you.

I think they are a detritus trap. Unless you're somehow able to get some flow going behind them to get stuff out that's settled, you'll end up having problems with detritus and possiblity phosphate/nitrate issues. I had constant hair algae problems with mine until I finally removed the back walls.

In addition, small fish can get back behind the walls. For the small ones, it's probably not such a big deal. They can turn around and wiggle their way back out. but, I almost lost my Purple Tang, because it somehow wedged its way behind the plate and got stuck there...probably for several days, because I kept looking for him in the tank, thinking he was just hiding in the rockwork somewhere. When I finally spotted him behind the wall, I panicked, thinking he was dead. He was almost dead. I managed to move the wall forward and prod him out of there. He lost one fin, almost lost his left eye and was quite scraped up. Luckily, I was able to nurse him back to health again. But, it was a lesson to me.

I was also very unhappy with the indentations in the rock wall. If I put a coral on one of the ledges, it completely blocked the view of anything beneath it to the light. However, the ceramic rockwork (not the wall) are a completely different story. I think they're great and the way that they're designed is to get smaller towards the top, so they're great for placing corals onto.

Maybe you've already used the walls before and had great success with them, but I just wanted to share the problems that I encountered with them. :-)

The R/O is hooked up and working now. Was a bit of a puzzle at first to get it to work because the flow restrictor was bad  but luckily like all obsessed reefers I have a spare laying around here LOL. So I have retained my hair for another frustrating endeavor..... Plumbing!!

The PVC bender is scheduled to arrive Friday and Sunday will be dedicated to plumbing the tank withteh aid of a friend of mine. I hope to also fasten the R/O line to the wall and cover it in cable counduit to disguise it and protect it at teh same time.

So far it looks like we will go over the top from the back and place a line in each back corner of the aquarium to return the water from teh sump. Teh 2 1 inch down will be used for feeding the skimmer and as a means to effect a water change easily and mess free (I hope). My hope is to be able to use cooler water and cause the sinking / upwelling effect and overflow the old water out ot the drain with little effort as possible on my behalf :)

Every so often I will get in there and do a "real" water change but 30 gallons a week is a lot to change so I want it to be easy so I will always do it ;)

Also going to add these to the outlets under the plug for some added protection against water contact http://www.intermatic.com/?action=subcat&sid=99

So, how does the PVC bender work?

V
05-31-2006, 07:06 AM
"heat' n 'treat"

same principle as a steel pipe bender?

Reefbaby
05-31-2006, 12:41 PM
okay...so you just heat it up and then bend it into the form you want? Does it in any way affect the integrity?

skippyreef
05-31-2006, 03:09 PM
You cut it to length and fill it with sand first. Then wrap the warm blanket portion around it and wait for it to heat teh pipe. After that it is pliable for several minutes. The pipe remains intact and the integrity is not compromised. We are bending 1.5 inch with it without any difficulties.

Reefbaby
05-31-2006, 03:38 PM

it is a method that involves no glue. i think that a preheated bead of pvc is applied at the joint. i was told that chemical companies use that method to avoid interaction with glue. i don't know much about it, but i think that EURO-REEF uses that method.

skippyreef
06-04-2006, 01:01 AM

The tank is running now. I am waiting on the electrician to come on Monday morning and hook up the power to the breakers that supply the tanks power. The main pump is running on my "spare" 15amp wall circuit behind the tank for a future endeavor and quarantine tanks.

It took a while to figure out the DUrso adjustment and a few phone calls to my plumbing friend but all is well now. The skimmer feed works liek a charm to! Nothing like feeding the skimmer directly from teh overflow with raw tank water and it saved me buying a pump to feed it. SO I spent about 2.00 in PVC and flex hose and saved a bundle!

I am happy to report the reef is finally running:mrgreen:

I started the tank with some live rock in the sump to get things moving, Placed an Inland Aquatics Fauna kit in ths sump, and am awaiting the arrival of the Tigger pods I ordered from Reeds Mariculture.

I received the Liter Meter III also. Now I need to figure out where I want to locate it LOL.

Here are some pics.

Those Actinics are LED spots with 60 individual 470 nm bulbs in them :) I use them for moon lighting LOL..

The lone gunman is part of a pair I ave had a few years too. The spot they like is the spot I thought they would.

No real wobble from the rack. It is stationary unless I clutz around with it :p

I hav ethe lower half built but am waiting on my T5 bulbs to arrive to get those mounted before I attach it to the main rack.

The moon light is out of the world cool. It is point source so the glitter lines persist at night as well. The middle of the reef is pretty bright like afull moon and then the light fades as it goes out on the reef. It is very cool.

Hey gang.......

Been a while but here are some updates: I added VHO to the Scheme of things and have set up my holding system for new arrivals. I am using T5 54 watters iver the holding with an ASM G2 Skimmer. I expect to receive my first group of corals in two weeks (giving the new system time to settle in). I am almost through a second outbreak of Diatoms and the Ceramics are starting to get some coralline coverage.

Here are some pics though! This is now

Thanks :)

It is coming along now and in time I think (and time is key) it will be very nice. I have been patient with this tank and have tried not to give in to the urges we all have to jut go nuts and stock it!!

My quarantine system is done now and I hope to finish up a couple more lighting rack this coming week and weekend for over the sump to grow out frags for the swap in November.

I have three cats but one loves the fish. We had that seat made by a friend so she could get a good view of them. It is her favorite thing to do.

I have 3 cats too and one is ALWAYS in front of the tank ;)
She is passed out in front of the nano right now.
