View Full Version : Clams foot got knocked off

I have a Crocea Clam that since i got it 2 years ago was stuck to a small rock. Some how last night someone knock the clam out of its spot. when i picked the clam up this morning i noticed it was not attached to the rock. i found the rock with what looks like a torn off foot. Is the clam going to be OK, or is done for.

It really depends on what's on the rock. If it's just baysal threads, it will probably be ok. If the baysal gland (foot) was damaged or torn off, things don't look good. Can you post a pic of what's left on the rock, or the bottom of the clam?

How's it looking? Is it open? Is the incurrent siphon closed normally or gaping open?

The clam is open and look normal as far as i can tell. the direction i placed it in the tank i cannot see the incurrent siphon, it normally open. The foot looked like a white piece of meat stuck to the rock with stringy things coming off it were the clam used to be. I cannot take a pic cause i feed the foot to my Symphyllia.

I turned the clam around its incurrent siphon is open. is it norm for the foot to come off sometimes?

It's not normal for the foot itself to come off, but sometimes they will release their anchor if they're unhappy where they are.

If they release, do they leave part of the foot behind? When i looked at the bottom of the clam it looked like he had no foot at all.

they will leave their bissal threads. The bissal threads or clams can be regrown if the clam needs them. Most bigger clams do without them as their weight and size is what anchors them.

Now if it is in fact the foot that has come off then that is not good and the majority of clams with a damaged foot will not survive. Like Phurst said all you can really do is wait it out and provide good water quality. If the clam is constantly moving it is probably not happy where it is. if it still responds to light changes and retracts its mantle I would think it would be that he let his bissal threads go so he could find a place that he liked more....
