Hey everyone I was wondering if anyone had some advice on some good return pumps for my 75gl that are not to loud I am currently running a blueline not to sure of the model since I bought it second hand. Its a great pump gives a awesome return even had to throttle it back but it is so loud.

I am running a external now I have never use a internal one so don't know to much about them or how reliable they are but would consider switching if it is quieter.

well it really depends on which one you want. i like the GenX external pumps and i like Mag drive internal pumps. the internals are quieter but most can not handle a high head loss rate.

you should try putting the pump on a mouse pad or other sound dampening material, you could also insulate the pump with sound dampener...not sure how that would effect pump temp though.

yeah I thought of that I put it on some cooler foam it helped a little I was also thinking about sound dampening material but think that might be a fire waiting to happen. I am thinking I will probably try a differant external maybe one not so powerful. Right now I have the throttle valve opened about 1/4 anymore and I get the water rising and dumping in the overflow. Whats a good return flow rate for a 75gl?

depends on the overflow hole size, if it is a 1" (standard) hole then it will handle 600gph.

yeah its one inch

it will be able to handle UP TO 600gph. if there are 2 then 1200gph. most external pumps are rated for much higher than 600gph, but if there are 2 drain the 1200gph pumps will work just fine. i have a GenX PCX 40 rated for 1190gph powering my 125 with dual corner overflows.
if you only have 1 overflow ... i switch to something internal like a Mag7.

there are automotive sound dampener that wont catch fire.

on the flow rate question we need more info:
Do you run a fuge? What size is it?
Do you have corals? Sps, or softies?
Do you use powerheads or a closed loop?

I have a 20 gallon long fuge for corals right now I just have some zoos and some xenia and I am using powerheads for right now

the one inch can ONLY handle up to 600gph. anything else needs to be made up with powerheads or a closed loop system.
bottom line is that you CAN NOT put more than 600gph through the overflow. anything more than that and you are going to overflow the tank.

Just an idea, but I lined the inside of my stand with one of those foam eggcrate mattress toppers from Wal-Mart. Cut down on the noise outside the stand considerably, and only cost like $15.

oh nice thats a awesome idea I am going to give that a try thanks if that still does not work I will just try another pump thats less powerful. Now when you say 600gph I will still need to take in account for the distance from the sump to the tank its about 3 feet so would I need a pump that pushes around 800gph?

I have used a number of pumps over the years and there is only one I would consider quiet, in fact, it is dead silent. You literally have to touch them to tell if they are on. I used a Velosity T4 for over a year before switching to something more powerful. It is not a pressure rated pump like the T3 and is overkill for your situation, but the smaller versions would be perfect. Have a look at the T2. It should be more than enough to meet your needs.
I ran a Quiet One 4000HH in sump before I switched to a basement pump and I found it was prone to vibration. I have also run a large Panworld and it was extremely loud. Of course it was also a 1750GPH pump so it had an excuse. My current pump is a Gen-X Mak5. This is also a large and loud pump.
