Unfortunately, after year of struggling, it looks as if I'm going to have to throw in the towel on my families business. My bank has decided that it no longer wants my company in its portfolio so it is forcing me out a couple days before we were to be bought out. The sucky part is that myself and 25 talented people are now out of a job.

I have decided that being jobless I probably need to get rid of the 180 and basement sump/fuge. I just dont think I can afford the extra power bill even though for I now have time for the maintenance. :) I'm a little bummed that I will probably have to part with my fish, most of which I've had for over a year (my six line almost 3).

I'm really torn about whether to set up the BC14 (I have in the basement) , or set up something like a 29 with a small under tank sump. I have most of the parts to go either way, except for the lighting on the 29.

What would you guys do in my place?

I think I'd go with the 29 personaly. Might use some of the proceeds from the 180 and livestock to pick up whatever equipment you lack to get it up and running. You might be able to keep your sixline that way too.

Oh man, that really sucks! I would be hard pressed to get rid of my reef under any circumstances. You sound like you believe you'll be out of a job for some time. Why not get your resume out quickly and see what turns up. Get the word out to your friends, associates, even your former business competitors. You never know Jon, until you try, there may be an employer looking for a guy with your talents at this very moment.

I am not sure what your livestock is but the six line should do well in a smaller tank. What about leaving your sump up and just moving your tank to the basement? Or setting up a small tank in the basement for some of the livestock. After having a system up for that long I would hate to have to more or less start over. Could you still use the sump and only run it through a small tank?

Thanks for the support. I'll land on my feet, I'm just not sure if I want to use this as a chance to persue something different. Granted printing is all I have ever known, but I am good at other things too.

As far as the tank, I really cant move the tank to the basement because its unfinished. The main reason my power bill is so high is that I have to run a lot of heaters to keep the system at temp. With my kill a watt I have detrmined that my whole system runs about $100 a month in power. I know thats not a lot compared to other systems, but my income just went from 50+K a year to about 20K until I am working again.

I am leaning towards a nice, small tank thats highly automated. I'm thinking a 29 or 40 with a sump under the stand. I think I can reuse most of my current equipment, so I would only have to get a tank. I have plenty of time to build a stand and canopy I guess.

I'm sorry to here about your business that really sucks. I got laid off from a job I had for 7 years, a couple of years ago. Now I'm going to school and exploring new options I hope you can find a path that makes you happy. it can be fun to change directions.

the only good thing is that it seems like some of my employees are finding work. I have even managed to find a new job, in another field for almost the same money I was making, with none of the headaches. AND my new job involves some travel, so I may be visiting a town near some of you in the future!

Yeah...we got screwed over pretty well.

We based our move/expansion on many things, but when it came to sales, it was my Sales Manager of 3 years that did the research. She supposedly talked with current and potential clients, did market research, etc. Last year when we started to struggle I found out that all the sales projections were bogus. Then to top it off we found out that she was embezzeling from us also.

Between the two of these, we were simply too damaged to recover.

That stinks!

Wow Jon, that really bites the big one. :cry: I know it's going to be hard to get your life back to a point of where you feel comfortable and a situation of where you are in control of your life again. I am sooooo glad that you got another job to keep funds coming in and to keep some of the stress out. Chin up and always, always look forward. I know better things await you cause you can't keep a good reefer down! :D Anddddd.... IMHO, I would go with the 29 or however larger you could go, so you can keep a sump/fuge as you've always had one and you don't want to strip everything out of your life that gave you joy and contentment. It will be your future stress release and "pressure check valve!" Hang in there I'm pulling for ya!
