I really like the show, I have only listened through ep8, but please please PLEASE curb the use of the word 'basically', it is really distracting!!!

I teach software classes regularly and have read that you should NEVER use that word when speaking to a group of people.

Keep up the good work.

Ray,
thanks for the comments.
i think as the shows go on, i use it less, and my speaking gets better.
problem is, i have never done any public speaking, teaching, nothing. in fact, im the tech geek they lock in the back closet to keep me from talking to people.. i just make things work...lol

i appreciate the advices and will try to keep that in mind. i cant make any promises though, a lot of this just "comes out" but i will do my best...lol

One of the developers I work with uses that word all the time when doing a demo, I always tell him about it but he can't seem to avoid it. I always keep count of how many times he uses it!!

lmao.. i can relate...
i think the problem is as a technician, we often have to explain things to people that barely know what a computer is..
an they always want it "basic"

so its been built into my vocab...lol

thanks for the tip though i will try and work on it.. :)

Rob does excellent for being a computer geek- I can relate to that in a way. I hate meeting new people or doing sales, giving speeches- anything like that. I don't even like to go to lunch with people I don't know- I get so nervous.

So Rob- I love the words you say over and over- especially greaaaaaaaaaaat- don't make me have to listen to old shows to hear that!! And I commend you for being so brave and doing video casts!! That is awesome!!

To be honest, I have never even noticed it. IME, (I used IME Rob, are you proud???) the information in each podcast is so engaging that you could have a bus exploding in the background and none of us would hear it. Keep up the good work Rob and welcome to TR Ray.

I agree Eddy ;)
I kinda like the words Rob uses all the time- they kinda grow on me. It wouldn't be the same show without his words ;)

He he he... just at EP!? It gets better.. from there, you see us get into the "Great" and "Stuff like that" and then get into the "Absolutelies" by me, Chris, and others...

Thank Goodness Rob cut out all my "Ummms" from my podcasts, or your speakers would be vibrating "Ummmmmmmmmm" ;)

Gotta love evolution...whether in a marine specimen...or in a podcast... no worries.....It's all good!

I'm still laughing about that!!

What? It's a scientific term.. used often in marine biology! My recent bout with Cyano began when a HUGE turbo decided to pass over the salty bridge, and left his shell, with ounces of white "icky stuff" behind in my tank!

The bottom line is that with your guests and the information that you provide, your podcast is by far the most professional of all of the reef podcasts I have heard. Now that you've gotten yourself into this, will be emulating radio/broadcast professionals! Unfortunately, I'm sure it is tooo time consuming to "script" your boadcast, but I do think that you are improving just on experience!

KUTGW!

wow.. guys.gals... i really appreciate all the great comments... thanks.. :)

the real servo,
i do work to make it a very educational and professional show.
i am working on a secondary show that will be more interactive and entertaining, but the primary goal of Talkingreef is education...

thanks again, all of you, for all the great support.

I think raynist is a bit of a perfectionist like myself. That's why I started the thread polling about previewing posts. It's distracting to try to read some of the posts when the spelling is so atroshious (sp), like that one I left on purpose. :p

I love the dictionary and use it everyday, especially when I'm posting because, basically, it stimulates my mind, improves my english, diction, spelling and makes me a better speaker. So, I looked up the word basic in my trusted American Heritage Dictionary. Here's what I found; First and necessary before all else and Something fundamental, among other definitions.

So, since you are teaching us the fundamentals of reef keeping and all it's related subjects, you are logically correct in using the word basically whenever you'd like. However, it's easy to over use many expressions such as this in public speaking, whether in front of people or over a broadcast. So, raynist's, request for you to try to limit your use of it is his way of trying to make you a better speaker and should not be taken personally, as an affront to your intelligence.

Of course I know you didn't take it personally because, basically, I could tell by your follow-up posts. I personally think you are doing a great job with the pod casts. I had to overcome a paralyzing fear of public speaking. I literally could not get words to come out of my mouth. Once as a young man, I walked out on stage as the moderator of a program in high school, stood there for a minute, throat paralyzed, tongue swollen and walked off, running home embarassed as one could get. I didn't speak on stage again until I found myself in a job, at age 40, that forced me to overcome that fear. Of course now you'd never no I like to talk. :D

Keep up the good work, Rob, but do your best to limit the use of the word, basically.

Dick

thanks dick,
nope, i took it as constructive criticism, and will try to be more conscious of it in the future.

i too have never done public speaking, never could..
in fact, this show is the first and only form of public speaking i have ever done..
and since you folks are not sitting right in front of me, its a bit easier.. :)

that said, its still quite weird to "talk to your computer"
i have come a long way, and i actually feel like im talking to you guys now when doing the show, but the good thing is i feel like its a more one on one conversation which makes me more comfortable.. :)

basically im getting better with it and doing much less re-takes.. and i hope it shows.. ;)

Rob - you deserve the biggest kudos of all for even attempting to produce something like this. I can barely keep up with all that I've got going in my life, let alone be on top of something to this degree, where people are depending on your each week!

It's GRRRREEEEAAAATTTT! :-)

Well, we could always send you pictures of ourselves and you could setup a screensaver to cycle through all of them. That way you could see all of us when you are talking to your computer. LOL

I've listened to the only other reef keeping podcast I could find and unsuscribed after listening to the 2nd episode. Why? Because they were so childish. There was good info there and I believe the hosts know a lot about reef keeping but I wasn't willing to listen to the silliness in order to get to the helpful stuff. TalkingReef is never foolish and always helpful.

I've now listened to all of the episodes and Rob, I can say that you have made great progress as a podcaster. I listen to a lot of podcasts and I think that TalkingReef is now as polished as any of them.

:) CJ... you rock! I agree in that this project (TR) is very informative, and has a very crisp packaging. No need to dig deep to find actionable content. It is there, from the intro through the sign off.

To be honest, I do listen to that podcast (I think I know which one you are referring to) and find that it has a decent "hobby related" entertainment factor.
Yes, it is sometimes short on content and they do try to put a LOT of various information into one podcast. It must also be a nightmare to search the various topics within a single podcast to get the information you really need. (would made Podzinger dependant on valium)

However, I would also like to say that those gents made it plain and clear that this is the intent of their product. They didn't want to be an "authority". They wanted to make a light hearted, informational and interesting podcast about the hobby they love. If you met the guys, you'd know that what you are seeing/hearing...is truly them. They are nutz! They have fun. They are reefers!

Another blatanly honest fact... I'd be NOWHERE in my hobby efforts if not for Melev and people like him. He has helped me, and countless others, with various projects that have both been a) successful (i.e. my mandarin feeding cafe) and b) money savers. I've learned a lot of DIY stuff from the community. Melev showed me how to make a real quick and cheap manifold for my reef. He did so without hesitation.

In any case, I seem to have the same battles with my kids. I can't for the life of me, figure out what they "see" in some of the music they listen to, the shows they watch etc. As the old saying goes "to each..his/her own."

Bottom line... keep enjoying TR. Let others know about TR. Provide feedback to Rob so he can keep the podcast as a product that you want. Listen to other "like shows" if for no other reason than to validade the fact that the TALKING REEF RULES!

I totally agree about the knowledge of the hosts. I just couldn't get by the silliness. I'm the mother of a 17 year old, I get enough silliness from him & his friends. :)

i find that when im speaking i keep a mental picture in my head that im the boss! that & midget wrestling playback from the week before! lol

spelling ,mistakes, amp, i defined spelling mistakes, u look in the dictonary under both these words, & there i am,>cheezy grin with my australian wallabies hat on back to front rob style holding up the letter A for Sesame Steet!
why else would they invent cream & jam dounuts if not to make our keyboard keys stick!

rob, i said it to u in a private email yonks ago (maybe the same time i was youngling unfriendly) about how the podcast content & the overall bar of the shows keep getting better!
i find u go up in stages, u will rise, then a handful of show will follow that benchmark, then a show comes along, where u sit back & think, actually, i enjoyed that more than usual>>then true to form the shows following fall in behind to the frontline!

ive got afew kind words for ya!, have a shave u bum! & never stop producing what seems to be a natral talent! ur a piece of the future in our hobby my friend, i see clips of the future from yogi training.
