I have a laptop, and my dad has a desktop. We both currently plug in a phone line to the modem and get the old-school dial up. If I want to go online at home, my dad has to get off, and then I can use the phone line. I would love to go wireless at home, and I am wondering what I need to do that? I think I need some sort of a router, but am not sure. Is it even possible to make a wireless network with the dial-up connection? How would I go about doing this? I think there are a lot of people in my same situation, that would like the answer.

Thanks..

Yes, it can be done, though it's not really the way the routers are designed to work.

Assuming the laptop had built in wireless, all you'll need is a wireless router with built in Ethernet ports. You'll have to set up internet connection sharing on the desktop, and make sure both the desktop and the laptop are in the same workgroup. Then, both computers can use the dialup connection.

You think ONE computer is slow on dialup, just wait until you try to share it :)

This is how we had out internet connection set up 5 or 6 years ago, before we got highspeed.

If you need more detail, let me know.

Does it matter if the desktop is on Xp and the laptop is on vista?

Shouldn't.

Go to broadband or better.. you can get converters and/or dialup modem types..but it's slower than snails on quaaludes.

I use Comcast here in MA, with a Linksys wireless router (about 50 bucks) and the wireless card in my laptop. I also have a USB wireless converter for my old laptop.

Works like a charm... no less than 56. Let's me spend more time here :D

Like the others said, you can share a dial up connection, but the speed will be the equal to molasses running uphill the winter. If you live in the sticks like me and DSL or cable isn't available, you should look into satellite. I have Wildblue, which is much faster than dialup for about $50 a month. I have mine plugged into my wireless router so I can use my laptop in any room in the house.

I love checking out TR while I'm on the throne (no, not now). :D

And my husband thinks I'm bad for talking on the phone while in the bathroom, geez! :)
