View Full Version : Dk'one's 180g Death Tank dkone 01-24-2008, 12:46 AM Here are a couple of pictures I worked on today of my tank for our club. The first is the center section, the second a FTS ... alas, my camera is pretty old and worn out and I had to picasso the pictures to correct for color. Will try to get a left and right shot then use autostitch to sew them into a panoramic view. I did take a bunch of pics of the corals, fish etc, will try to upload those later.
Warm Regards,

is that one of those true aussie perc clowns?
my lfs is selling one of them for like 80$ i want to get a pair so bad.... dkone 01-24-2008, 01:56 AM Yes, it is an aussie, Amphiprion ocellaris (Black and White Australian clownfish). He is 3 years old now. I once had a mated pair. Sadly one died after 18 months - vanished without trace. Now 'Herbert" is alone - I keep thinking of getting him another mate, perhaps one day I shall. He defends that sarcrophyton alcyonidae leather vigorously though is otherwise a good citizen of the tank. He once lived in a large RBTA (rose bubble tip anemone with his mate "Martha"). Sadly, my RBTA collection (i had 5 at one point, 4 offspring and their mother) perished along with most of the tank v2. A lesson in regular maintenance, water changes and keeping up with trace element additon and patience. pvtdonut 01-24-2008, 02:17 AM aw. poor lil guy. all alone now...u should get him another mate.......
do u know if they are compatible with true percs? thats what i have in my tank...if i could..it would be neat to have a pair along with my pair of clowns i have now... veriann 01-24-2008, 03:21 AM A lesson in regular maintenance, water changes and keeping up with trace element additon and patience.
amen to that brother - & im not even apart of the cloth cult. :D
Nice tank bud, definitely got plenty of future potential, to which im sure you will have fun along the way! dkone 01-24-2008, 04:29 AM Not sure if these links will work, but uploaded 2 slideshows of my tanks Corals.

Ammonia NH3-4 0.004
Nitrite N02 0.004
Nitrate N03 0.4
Phosphate P04 0.26
Silica Si02-3 0.8
Potassium K 321
Calcium Ca 292
Boron B 3.9
Molybdenum Mo 0.3
Strontium Sr 6.9
Magnesium Mg 1021
Iodine I- 0.03
Copper Cu++ 0.03
Alk meg/L 3.17
The good:
Nitrates are down (from 1.2).
Silicates are coming down (from 2.5) and Mg levels going up (from 888).
The bad:
Phosphates are still high, though hopefully thePhosban reactor(s) added a week will now help reduce this - also have begun a regimie of rinsing food and reducing form 4 feedings a day down to 2 feedings a day (I work on the feed less, but feed often mindset)
Calclum has dropped - will have to buffer that one back up.
Potassium has gone down, likely a result of starting up the fuge and adding chaeto (which is growing like crazy).
Not too bad, still work to be done, as always, it takes time !!! Budde 01-24-2008, 06:41 PM Awesome Tank! I too want those Black & White Australian Clowns!

I confess, we Brits made a tragic error when we stuffed all our riff-raff onto a boat and posted them to Aussie land. 200+ years later, now the darn Aussie's won't even let us into our own country, they beat us at most of the sports we taught them, they beat the world at swimming (not a surprise, most are practising on how to swim home to the motherland of England!). I appologise on behalf of the glorious British Empire for this monstrousity known as Australia we brought into being. Ahh well, perhaps we can just swap Islands, you can have ours, we can have yours ? eh ? fair trade ?

Wouldn't the Queen or Parliament or the PM or somebody have to agree about this? Or can you two just make a gentleman's agreement? dkone 01-24-2008, 10:38 PM *COUGH COUGH* Gentlemen *COUGH COUGH* :)
I am a true blue Brit, ok, not so true blue as I fled my homeland and arrived here in the States 7 years ago!. He is a descendant of convicts, packed off to a far away Island, who somehow managed to survive the horrors of the new land. I am sure he has a whole school of convict tangs in his tank as well !!! We shall never come to an agreement ! and YES, we shall take back the Ashes once more, the Bodyline series was a fair cop and you just got upset at loosing the game and burned the stumps! Bleh ! Carmie, you have no idea ;)
/GRIN CarmieJo 01-24-2008, 11:39 PM  Convict tangs! veriann 01-25-2008, 01:26 AM lol , that was quite funny actually, the brits, always good for a laugh!
arrr yes, prob half of what you just said would fall by the way side to other nations because of the attached mental stigma our 2 contries have endured so intimately. Having said that - thats prob why we dont let you back in..lol
A gentlemans swap of islands is in order during the oppersite months, winter for summer, summer for winter, however theres just one problem, .... The pakastani's own most of your country now because you were all off at the pub for a counter meal & pint 362 days of the year! lol, at least we have the common sence to drink till we're stupid @ Home. :tongue2:
As for the sports, well history might one day show the creators may very well beat the created - again. But that doesn't matter because the asporations of the entire universe is for the created to beat the creator, to which we robbed you of everything including your back-chat! lol
Ive left the union jack on the flag though, just out of respect for providing us with stale moldy bread, a few rum barrels, & all those dodgy post war patched up ships to get us here. lol dkone 01-25-2008, 04:20 AM Whilst the akastani's & indian's may own much in the uk, especially newspaper shops, laundry mats, resteraunts, clothing stores, etc, I got to say, they make darn fine food !!! I do miss a fine curry, though we have a couple of resteraunts here in Colorado Springs, it's just not the same! I shall forgive you the abuse of the beloved Union Jack and know in your heart that you long to wrap yourself in it once again and return home to the bossom of the Empire. I do confess to having spent many a lunchtime, ok, every lunchtime from work, down the local pub (the Golden Lion). It was tradition, you just have to have a pint and a steak and kidney pie with chips and mushy peas for lunch! Now here, in the States, if I ask folks to go down the bar at lunchtime I return to find AAA cards on my desk and threats of "intervention" I obviously need ! Tis like a different world !
Ahh well, enough reminissing... !
Warm Regards, veriann 01-25-2008, 09:50 AM its amazing the different mentalities of the world, liquid lunches here aren't as main stream as the uk, but they still happen, even more so in corporate.
Pie with peas was a favorite of mine, however since leaving my home state of queensland, ask someone for it down here & they give the weirdest looks:unsure: like im a fruit cake!
Yeah your right, enough BS, get to updating would ya! :D CarmieJo 01-25-2008, 11:41 PM Mushy peas????!!!!! Skurvey Dog 01-26-2008, 12:24 AM Would that be sort of like a sheppard's pie? dkone 01-26-2008, 03:56 AM Mushy Peas ! Yum ! the true style is marrow fat peas, cooked down, and mushed/blended up to form a thick green paste of goodness and tasty wonder! Served commonly with chips, pies, or even on their own! Yum !
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shepherd's Pie with minced (ground) beef.Shepherd's pie is a traditional English dish that consists of a bottom layer of minced (ground) meat covered with mashed potato.
The mince is traditionally lamb (hence Shepherd), and the dish was often made with meat left over from a Sunday roast. In North America the lamb is often replaced with minced (ground) beef. In Britain, in common usage 'shepherd's pie' is used to apply to either.
The mince layer is traditionally made by browning the meat in a pan with finely chopped onions and then then simmered in stock. Other ingredients are often added, including garlic, chopped carrots, peas or other vegetables, and herbs such as rosemary or oregano). Often tomato puree and sometimes wine are added to the mix.
The topping is made from potato mashed with butter, to which cheese is sometimes added. For a decorative effective, the topping is sometimes piped onto the meat layer. The entire pie is then baked in the oven, until the topping is golden and slightly crisp. For extra richness and colour, an extra layer of cheese can be added on top.
Variations
A similar dish made with fish instead of meat is called a fisherman's pie, or if in a cream sauce it is called "admiral's pie".
Cottage pies are often available in Australia as a standard meat pie, with a layer of mashed potato replacing the usual pastry lid. This variant is also known and labelled as a potato pie or, in New Zealand, a potato top pie.
In North America a variation on shepherd's pie, sometimes called Chinese pie or cowboy pie, is made with a layer of ground beef, a layer of corn and a layer of mashed potatoes. French Canadians call this variant pâté chinois. Peas and carrots are commonly mixed with or used to replace corn. In the northeast U.S., green beans are often used instead of corn, and frequently a layer of tomato sauce is added to the beef.
Vegetarian "Shepherdess" Pie with peasShepherdess Pie is vegetarian version in which meat is replaced with a variety of beans, TVP, or mycoprotein products such as Quorn.
Hachis parmentier is a popular French dish that's a close equivalent. It's more of a family dish than a restaurant favourite, and, like shepherd's pie, is often used to make leftovers more interesting.
Midwestern Version - ground beef with cream of mushroom soup and green beans topped with mashed potatoes and baked until brown and crisp.
Shepherds Pie, Cottage Pie, etc, I ate on a regular basis back home in England, especially during cold weather. CarmieJo 01-27-2008, 01:27 AM We have totally hijacked your thread! It is one of the things I love here, we can talk about mushy peas. Now I have acquired another random bit of trivia that is probably crowding out something I need to remember! Skurvey Dog 01-27-2008, 01:47 AM I love sheppards pie, it's not baaaaaaadd. :p You're making me hungry Dkone. I agree with you CJo... I love this place.... lots of stimulus!!!!! *anything that boosts the alcohol content* Small Fry 01-30-2008, 12:29 AM Back to reefing anyone???
I saw a dish served with mushy peas on resturant makeover, not very appetizing.
You can always change the name of the thread to "Argumentary referances from culinary giants" and move it to the discussion section??
And lmao, convict tangs. Only you Carmie can take one word out of a whole paragraph and make it into a joke. Thus, the reason why i love it here :p dkone 02-08-2008, 02:16 PM ... For Veriann, who I know likes his special aussie species ...
Here is a new aussie clam variety I discovered in my "Death Tank" a few days ago! I found some details on it online and thought I would share them with you !
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd269/dkone2007/DeathClam.jpg
From DeathDepot Dead Aquaria's webste. More information on this rare species!
Tridacna deathicus aussie Crocea Clam - 1st grade -
Diet: Needs no feeding. If you feel sorry for the deathicus you can eat a bowl of clam chowder infront of your tank.
Feeding: Not required
Behavior: Very peaceful toward other tankmates, some consider it to be comatose infact!
Care: Many consider the deathicus an Easily-maintenance specimen.
Lighting: Doesn't care if you have NO, PC, VHO, MH/HQI or T5. The deathicus thrives under any lighting condition and even total darkness!
Water flow: Too much water flow may blow your deathicus around the tank. The deathicus can be attached with glue to any substrate to prevent blowage!
General notes: Tridacna deathicus Crocea Clam 1st grade will come in a single color - dead. The deathicus Crocea Clam 1st grade is very peaceful to other tank members. The deathicus Crocea Clam 1st grade is an Easy-maintenance specimen. Any lighting, even a candle or flashlight once a week is fine. The deathicus Crocea Clam 1st grade requires low flow else it can be blow from the substrate.
Water parameters: Even the most foul water is good for your deathicus Crocea. (SG whatever your broken swingarm guage reads is fine, pH this clam can tolerate extremes, Temp. -50F to 500F though should not be placed under a broiler as this could crack the delicate shell).
Origin: The deathicus Aussie Crocea Clam 1st grade is commonly collected from The tanks of most experienced hobbiests!
Note: Due to variations among each species, livestock may not look identical to the image provided. Expect diversity since each animal is unique in color, texture and shape.
Yes, the deathicus in this photograph was sitting on the carpet, out of water, in the sun. A true testiment to the hardiness of the species! It can be carried in the pocket, is great for your empty pico and doubles as an ash-tray in a pinch. No other clam in the industry has the versatility of the Tridacna deathicus crocea. Order yours today!
Warm Regards, veriann 02-09-2008, 04:16 AM Your a sick man DK, but funny as hell! Coreyz 02-16-2008, 11:08 PM Thank you that comic relief just made my day !!! LOL Skurvey Dog 02-16-2008, 11:29 PM Grief! I've got one of those in my spa room, and I was using it as an ashtray. So exactly how long are they capable of existing outside of salt water? Heck, If I throw it in my tank, Vandamere might take of smoking with all the nictotein residue absorbed in the calcium! pvtdonut 02-17-2008, 08:45 AM "SO THATS WHT HAS BEEN MAKING HIM HANG UPSIDE DOWN ALL THIS TIME! "
lmao pvtdonut 02-17-2008, 08:50 AM are you willing to do a trade with me Dkone?
i have live rock that i will trade. i found it in my back yard the other day, its filled with a ton of critters ranging from worms to arthroPODS....lol we know how neat all of that stuff can look in our tank... has a ton of mud u can scrape off and put in your sump too.
=P dkone 02-17-2008, 05:19 PM Sadly the deathicus shell suffered from a structural integrity failure and separated into two halves - it could have been carrying it around in my pocket induced the failure! I threw the two halves into a cup of coffee so they would not be exposed to air for too long and fed them with a sugar substance, striring vigorously! I did consider the use of an expensive M.I.L.K additive but hate putting things into my cup that I cannot test for! I have hopes that the deathicus will make a full recovery, if not, then some super-glue gel may have to be dug out of my frag supplies to effect some quick repairs.
For now I have more live rock than I can shake a stick at, filling up my 75g sump slowly --- alas, I just can't take anymore, though MUD is always good - not sure if the stuff you apply to your face as a beauty product is suitable for a refugium though? (perhaps i'll ask Rob next TRL, "I put some face MUD in my fuge but it's just not working out for me - ideas?). Skurvey Dog 02-17-2008, 05:36 PM :rotfl: Not too sure about the MUD, as I'm sort of thinking that it has a very high level of extra, unknown nutrient export there. Of course you could always get a maginified look at the corals pores/complexions and see if their polyps/pimples are vanishing. ???? Not sure that would be too good for them though. Will have to get back with you on that one! CarmieJo 02-25-2008, 08:35 PM  You guys are nuts! |
