Hello all -

I am new to the hobby and would like to know if anyone out there knows of any basic fish & coral food recipes? I've heard of raw squid, shrimp and veggies into a blender, but do they all need to be raw?

I use DIY food for my fish and corals that will eat meaty bits.

The base of the food is the frozen seafood mix I get at Wal-Mart. It's like 3 pounds and dirt cheap. It has frozen shrimp, squid and octopus. I'll also pick up a couple of raw clams, mussels, scallops and/or some white fish. To this, I'll also throw in a pack of frozen mysis and whatever else happens to be in the freezer, some cyclopeeze, a mix of flake and pellet food, some DTs phytoplankton a sheet of nori and really just about any other fish related foods that are at hand. I blend it in small batches in a food processor, mix it all in a big bowl to make sure it's all evenly divided and freeze it in plastic zip-loc bags. One preparation of this lasts me the better part of a yer.

Heres another podcast (like TR) that had a video on making your own fish food. About 1/2 way down you can download episode 5B for a tutorial on making your own food.

I like Phurst's idea. I will have to go Wal-Mart over the weekend. Is that mix raw or cooked? Does that matter? Also, I will need to pick-up a dirt cheap food processor as well as my wife will not appreciate me using our current blenders...lol

Ideally raw is better, but not the end of the world. Cooked food loses nutrition and marine organisms aren't used to eating cooked food anyway. Also, one of those small food processors can be had for less than $20. You could always sell it at a garage sale if you need to...which is exactly why I never buy yard sale appliances. :D

Hell, you'll be at Wal-Mart anyway, Land of cheap crap appliances......

The mix is raw. I've never used anything cooked, nor do I plan on trying.

i would also add a few drops of garlic extract to the mix. it will help boost the fish's immune system, so they can fight off diseases. maybe even ad some vitamins (fish related of course) to it if you are feeling froggy !! lol

Add some nori too.
