i am much happier with this 40 gallon frag tank for now. i have not had a lot of time for fragging lately, but i can always add more tanks to the setup. this 40 is already drilled to do that.

next will be corals, fish and inverts, but since it is Christmas eve ... i am a bit rushed to get out to the family get togethers.

I like the scaping of in the new version of the tank much better than the old. It looks a lot more roomy now!

It'll be nice to be able to follow your progress Bobby. I really do need to re-do my rockwork at some point. I like the island look soooo much better, and it gives the fish more room.

yeah, there is WAY more room for the tangs to swim around. before it was just the everyday "rock wall" and was CRAM packed with corals and frags. now it is almost all SPS. i need to update the sump pics next, now there are 2 remote deep sand beds in there and about 100lbs. of LR.

the RDSB's have about 300gph running through them, and are excellent nitrate reducers. not to mention that they can be cleaned out or have the sand replaced whenever they need it and it will not mess up the water parameters.

i have 2 more drilled 40breeders that are going to be added and separately filtered so i can still sell soft coral frags on frags.org ... i just have to pick them up and build a stand for them.

the RDSBs are a recommended replacement for a DSB in the tank. i love what they have done for my system !!

I have a spare salt bucket (yeah, only one) I was thinking about putting to use as a RDSBB (remote deep sand bed bucket). I think the bucket, filled with 6+ inches of sand should work well for me. What'd ya think?

i say to fill it to within a few inches of the top, and the secret is to keep it from getting light. i use the tops of the buckets to shield it from light and SLOW FLOW through them. my buckets are both within a few inches of the top of the bucket and have a little less than 300gph running through each of them.

I guess I didn't realize you were using buckets for your RDSB. My tank doesn't measure any NO3, but I'm also not afraid of some algae growing in my tank. I wouldn't mind a RDSB helping keep the algae to a minimum though.

i ordered 3 x 250w Coralvue electronic ballasts and 1 10k 250w Coralvue Reeflux bulb. TWO days after i placed my order, much to my surprise ... the package had ALREADY arrived !! EXCELLENT packaging !! EXCELLENT customer service !! i bet we spoke on the phone at least 10 times before i ordered (mostly for advise on what would be the best lighting for MY tank.

the drains actually run from my refugium and drain into the buckets at about 300gph maybe a little less. you indeed do see a 90deg elbow going into one bucket and a 45 on the other, just so all of the flow hits the buckets.

the twin floats are my ATO.

as for jelly beans in a 5 gallon bucket ... 132,193, but only if they are the small funky flavored ones !! lol

Why not have the buckets outside the sump so you don't displace water volume? Is it just to be safe for leaks? Did I just answer my own question? LOL Also will play sand work just as well?

you DID answer your own question, and my sump is big enough to to house them.

i would recommend an Aragonite based sand ... silica is still a touchy subject in the hobby.

BTW ... i added a couple of new corals yesterday !!

i started the red bug treatment (1/2 pill) tonight at 11pm, just before the lights went completely out on the system. i will not be getting the same pic documentation as Victoria was able to. mainly because i am hoping that with the lights out the treatment will be less stressful on the sensitive inverts in the system. i know this is a long shot, but i do not think anyone has actually tried this yet. if they have ... i could not find anything online about it.

ii am going to treat for 12-14 hours. when the time is up i am going to do a 25% water change, reconnect the air intake to the skimmer, and reintroduce the carbon reactor to the system. this should remove any medication left in the system after the water change.

here is a pic of my ORA Purple Bonsai that you can CLEARLY see the red bugs on. i will take another pic of the same coral in the morning, when the halides come back on at noon, to compare this one to.

Bobby, from the pic you posted, and I hope all pics that you would have posted.... treatment looks to have had a positive impact and has eradicated your problem or the majority there of. How does the tank, overall, look after the treatment.

thanks Lori, everything has excellent polyp extension (as usual) and nothing at all seems to have been effected by the interceptor. i am still going to do the other 2 treatments just to be on the safe side ... but as of now ... i see nothing.

thanks man, it has been a long process to eradicate these red bugs, but i think the outcome will be well worth it. so far it looks like my starfish (2) and hermits are doing great too. i guess we will see how things go for them. i did a little higher dose that i probably should have, but i had a pretty good infestation going on.

Yes i have Lori, but a little secret of mine ... a lot of them were trades on RC. i have some Zoas and Palys that everyone wants right now, so i have been trading my butt off over the past few months. however, i stopped immediately upon noticing the red bugs and have not traded anything since then. i think i know where they came from, but it does not really matter. i just have to get rid of them.

i did get a few new things yesterday though ... here is my newest piece ... i am hoping that it really changes with my lighting

something CRAZY that i just noticed ... i have a TON of pods that have survived treatment number one !! i was looking at some of the acro frags that there were red bugs on, and what did i see ?? PODS EVERYWHERE in my frag tank !! i do not know if it was because the lights were out and everyone was sleeping (odd for pods) or what, but i know what i see when i look in the tank. PODS !!

That is really cool Bobby. I KNOW, just know, the color will change. Look at everything else that was in your Dt and how those Reeflux breathed new life into them. That is the new buzz bulb you have there! I had already decided if my coral pot started to lose ground, that I was gonna send it to you..... so far not too much change, but ya never know. I bet it would look better in your DT with those Refflux though! :tongue2: If I can't get my MH situation taken care of soon, you may have alot more than that! I'll just have to go day by day. The *&^*%@# company sent me the wrong MH Reflux so I have to wait till Monday before they ship another out. If my system degrades between now and then, I have decided to purchase the Hang on MH dealy until I can get my system squared away.

i would not worry to much about the bulb. as long as there is light getting to the coral they should be fine for a few days. you could always just turn the fixture so that one day the light is on one side and the nest day it is on the other side, by rotating it 180 degrees, if it comes down to it.

i am in love with these bulbs ... if i ever use anything else ... it will HAVE to be well proven to be better than these.

Glad your first treatment went well. I noticed a lot of pods survived in the nano when I treated as well. No idea why, cause if anything, I dosed a little extra.

just finished the second RB treatment and everything looks great. even after the 100g water change. i went for 24 hours this time because i knew i was getting the new acro today so i wanted him "dipped" for a few hours in the tank water with the interceptor.

Any signs of bugs between treatments? I never did, but treated 3 times anyway.

nope, no signs or no visible bugs ... i am going with 3 treatments too. better to be safe than sorry.

i DID clean one end of the tank from coraline and got this decent pic ... and BTW ... the bubble algae seems to be dying off on its own. ALOT of it is turning white and disappearing in quite a few large areas. i am going to let it go and see if the skimmer and GFO are doing what they are suppose to be doing. i guess we can call this a test of sorts.

Bobby, I know that you know this but for anyone who doesn't know; you have to keep siphoning the dead algae off so it doesn't decompose and release the nutrients back into your tank.

Hey Bobby I just saw your post for this thread and thought I would give it a look at. The tank looks good. well I didn't stop to just look at just the tank at first. ok lets get down to it.
Now how did you do the buckets in the sump? In easy sense did you just take a bucket and put in the sump with some flow, with no holes in the bucket,and just let the water flow over it?

the buckets have a hole in the top to let the flow into the bucket, and a hole on the side that cant be seen and small holes in the top for the water to flow ACROSS the surface of the sand at a fairly slow rate, so the sand is not disturbed to much.
