i am much happier with this 40 gallon frag tank for now. i have not had a lot of time for fragging lately, but i can always add more tanks to the setup. this 40 is already drilled to do that.
next will be corals, fish and inverts, but since it is Christmas eve ... i am a bit rushed to get out to the family get togethers.
ENJOY !! poppin_fresh 12-25-2007, 12:15 AM I like the scaping of in the new version of the tank much better than the old. It looks a lot more roomy now! Phurst 12-25-2007, 12:22 AM It'll be nice to be able to follow your progress Bobby. I really do need to re-do my rockwork at some point. I like the island look soooo much better, and it gives the fish more room. lReef lKeeper 12-25-2007, 12:28 AM yeah, there is WAY more room for the tangs to swim around. before it was just the everyday "rock wall" and was CRAM packed with corals and frags. now it is almost all SPS. i need to update the sump pics next, now there are 2 remote deep sand beds in there and about 100lbs. of LR.
the RDSB's have about 300gph running through them, and are excellent nitrate reducers. not to mention that they can be cleaned out or have the sand replaced whenever they need it and it will not mess up the water parameters. lReef lKeeper 12-25-2007, 12:31 AM wow, you guys see that orange cap just above the toadstool ??
here it is now ...

CarmieJo 01-20-2008, 08:44 PM Thanks for the labels, I think that they will help when you get those unknown frags. lReef lKeeper 01-22-2008, 04:15 PM some of these are still unknown because of thier size ... they are SOME of the frags i have recently aquired through trade and at a frag swap, but some frags need to color back up before i post pics of them. my cheap camera can not focus on them good enough to get good pics of them, so i will have my buddy with the macro lens come back up and shoot some pics.

that purple bonsai is awesome I can't wait to start trading with you. lReef lKeeper 01-24-2008, 07:24 PM used some of my E-Town credit for him ... he costed me a pretty penny, but was well worth it. he is already picking algae off of the rocks.
then you better start that tank up !! nay,kid 01-24-2008, 07:28 PM I'm ready to put her in place this weekend. I got my matt guyver drip system today so let the fun begin! lReef lKeeper 01-24-2008, 07:37 PM doyou have a build thread going here ?? nay,kid 01-24-2008, 07:41 PM not yet I'm going to start taking pics as I go this weekend. veriann 01-25-2008, 12:54 AM matt guyver is that long text for Mgyver? So what your telling is you made it out of a paper clip & chewy gum?
and duct tape, never forget duct tape. Skurvey Dog 01-26-2008, 11:09 PM Absolutely stunning Bobby! I really like the remote DSB and the other custom additions you added and can't wait to see your frag tank take off. I wish I have more room! lReef lKeeper 01-26-2008, 11:24 PM i have 2 more drilled 40breeders that are going to be added and separately filtered so i can still sell soft coral frags on frags.org ... i just have to pick them up and build a stand for them.
the RDSBs are a recommended replacement for a DSB in the tank. i love what they have done for my system !! poppin_fresh 01-26-2008, 11:34 PM I have a spare salt bucket (yeah, only one) I was thinking about putting to use as a RDSBB (remote deep sand bed bucket). I think the bucket, filled with 6+ inches of sand should work well for me. What'd ya think? lReef lKeeper 01-26-2008, 11:54 PM i say to fill it to within a few inches of the top, and the secret is to keep it from getting light. i use the tops of the buckets to shield it from light and SLOW FLOW through them. my buckets are both within a few inches of the top of the bucket and have a little less than 300gph running through each of them.
i got the idea from Anthony Calfo here ...
remote dsb (http://forum.marinedepot.com/Topic20039-13-1.aspx) poppin_fresh 01-27-2008, 12:03 AM I guess I didn't realize you were using buckets for your RDSB. My tank doesn't measure any NO3, but I'm also not afraid of some algae growing in my tank. I wouldn't mind a RDSB helping keep the algae to a minimum though. Skurvey Dog 01-27-2008, 01:11 AM Hey Nay,kid...... I like the new avitar. What does it say anyway? Looks like Black Sabbath. You aren't that "young" are you? ;P nay,kid 01-28-2008, 04:52 PM yes its black sabbath I'm a huge fan. I'm 32, Its temporary until i can get some shots of my tank up and running lReef lKeeper 02-07-2008, 10:05 PM well i updated my lighting this week !! and would like to post my experience with this online vendor here in my thread ...
i ordered 3 x 250w Coralvue electronic ballasts and 1 10k 250w Coralvue Reeflux bulb. TWO days after i placed my order, much to my surprise ... the package had ALREADY arrived !! EXCELLENT packaging !! EXCELLENT customer service !! i bet we spoke on the phone at least 10 times before i ordered (mostly for advise on what would be the best lighting for MY tank.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT ANYONE LOOKING FOR REEFING EQUIPMENT TRY HIS STORE ... Reef Specialty (http://www.reefspecialty.com) ... for above and beyond customer service. veriann 02-08-2008, 12:22 AM bobby, im happy you found what you wanted. - Im even happier i now have an american online vendor to supply me with weird looking end plugs on my electrical equiptment:unsure: lol
narr, just playing around - im just a sucker for losing money on the conversion rate instead muhahaha, oh your not laughing! well it is great to get customer service & a proper choice system to boot! Happy now! lol
Bud, how big are these buckets, 9lt sized or the big@ss salt buckets, & the next logical question is have i seen them? If not will i see them? & how many questions can one ask in ones own sentance? hmmm, i think its friday, i can even smell it in my thoughts:raining: lReef lKeeper 02-08-2008, 07:42 AM hey V,
the buckets are 5 gallons salt buckets, so i am guessing that they are "big@ss salt buckets", lol.
if you have not seen them ...
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n75/lReef_lKeeper/100_4471.jpg
you can ask as many questions as yo want to in your own sentence. lol
FRIDAY !!!!!!!! veriann 02-08-2008, 08:04 AM sweet, big@ss buckets in a big@ss tub. a few inches above the water line, 1 hose taped off the display i assume for each as an overflow effect.
just flowing at the water surface? one on the right look like a terminator cap or 90deg elbow, one on the left looks buried!
what flow rate you have feeding to each? not much by the lack of ripples
whats the twin float systems for?
how many jelly beans can you fit into a 5gal bucket? lol lReef lKeeper 02-08-2008, 08:16 AM the drains actually run from my refugium and drain into the buckets at about 300gph maybe a little less. you indeed do see a 90deg elbow going into one bucket and a 45 on the other, just so all of the flow hits the buckets.
the twin floats are my ATO.
as for jelly beans in a 5 gallon bucket ... 132,193, but only if they are the small funky flavored ones !! lol veriann 02-08-2008, 08:49 AM sweet.
oh...make that 132,192, i dont like the taste of the black ones.
*walks away lop-sided* nay,kid 02-08-2008, 05:25 PM Why not have the buckets outside the sump so you don't displace water volume? Is it just to be safe for leaks? Did I just answer my own question? LOL Also will play sand work just as well? lReef lKeeper 02-08-2008, 06:16 PM you DID answer your own question, and my sump is big enough to to house them.
i would recommend an Aragonite based sand ... silica is still a touchy subject in the hobby.
BTW ... i added a couple of new corals yesterday !!

I Really want a frag of that Green Monti cap if you have any Frags available.
I am wanting to grab that Large Naso at EEA as well. Skurvey Dog 02-09-2008, 03:50 AM Looooooking goooood baaaaby! :wow: I like the new aquascaping also. Gosh, how long did that take and did you use all of the existing LR that you had? I really am envious of your extra room available to have that large of a sump and be able to add that RDSB. I hear that is the ticket! I loved all the pics and I could see all kinds of new growth on your corals. They are love'n what you're doing! lReef lKeeper 02-11-2008, 01:49 PM well, here is the reason that i missed the show last night !! it took me over 8 hours in total to get this look, but i am still contemplating on a few minor changes to the rock work and coral placement.

Vanderbilt Chromis, Chromis | Pet Solutions (http://www.petsolutions.com/Vanderbilt-Chromis+I119550L+C162175.aspx) lReef lKeeper 03-28-2008, 11:19 PM i started the red bug treatment (1/2 pill) tonight at 11pm, just before the lights went completely out on the system. i will not be getting the same pic documentation as Victoria was able to. mainly because i am hoping that with the lights out the treatment will be less stressful on the sensitive inverts in the system. i know this is a long shot, but i do not think anyone has actually tried this yet. if they have ... i could not find anything online about it.
ii am going to treat for 12-14 hours. when the time is up i am going to do a 25% water change, reconnect the air intake to the skimmer, and reintroduce the carbon reactor to the system. this should remove any medication left in the system after the water change.
here is a pic of my ORA Purple Bonsai that you can CLEARLY see the red bugs on. i will take another pic of the same coral in the morning, when the halides come back on at noon, to compare this one to.
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n75/lReef_lKeeper/ORAbansai.jpg lReef lKeeper 03-29-2008, 12:45 AM after posting the "clearly" visible pic ... i though, if you do not know what you are looking for they are NOT clearly visible. here they (the tiny red/tan spots) are from the same pic ...

J/K lReef lKeeper 03-29-2008, 10:56 AM thanks Lori, i wish i was turning 25 agian !! try 36 and feeling every bit of 46. lol. Skurvey Dog 03-29-2008, 11:29 AM Well now Wilbur.... add just one more year to how you feel and you can relate to this old fossil! :tongue2: lReef lKeeper 03-29-2008, 12:45 PM after 12 hours or treatment i SEE absolutely no red bugs, but my WC water is not up to salt content yet so will be going with a treatment of about 18-24 hours. here is a pic of the same bonsai after the first treatment ...

How does the tank, overall, look after the treatment. mysterybox 03-29-2008, 08:44 PM wow! really nice Bobby! lReef lKeeper 03-29-2008, 08:47 PM Bobby, from the pic you posted, and I hope all pics that you would have posted.... treatment looks to have had a positive impact and has eradicated your problem or the majority there of. How does the tank, overall, look after the treatment.
thanks Lori, everything has excellent polyp extension (as usual) and nothing at all seems to have been effected by the interceptor. i am still going to do the other 2 treatments just to be on the safe side ... but as of now ... i see nothing. lReef lKeeper 03-29-2008, 08:50 PM wow! really nice Bobby!
thanks man, it has been a long process to eradicate these red bugs, but i think the outcome will be well worth it. so far it looks like my starfish (2) and hermits are doing great too. i guess we will see how things go for them. i did a little higher dose that i probably should have, but i had a pretty good infestation going on. Skurvey Dog 03-29-2008, 09:10 PM I am so glad that things look positive as i know you have added alot of investment in the DT over the last few months. Thinking about you my friend! :love!: lReef lKeeper 03-29-2008, 09:20 PM Yes i have Lori, but a little secret of mine ... a lot of them were trades on RC. i have some Zoas and Palys that everyone wants right now, so i have been trading my butt off over the past few months. however, i stopped immediately upon noticing the red bugs and have not traded anything since then. i think i know where they came from, but it does not really matter. i just have to get rid of them.
i did get a few new things yesterday though ... here is my newest piece ... i am hoping that it really changes with my lighting
Chalice ...
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n75/lReef_lKeeper/100_5001.jpg lReef lKeeper 03-29-2008, 09:41 PM something CRAZY that i just noticed ... i have a TON of pods that have survived treatment number one !! i was looking at some of the acro frags that there were red bugs on, and what did i see ?? PODS EVERYWHERE in my frag tank !! i do not know if it was because the lights were out and everyone was sleeping (odd for pods) or what, but i know what i see when i look in the tank. PODS !! Skurvey Dog 03-29-2008, 09:42 PM That is really cool Bobby. I KNOW, just know, the color will change. Look at everything else that was in your Dt and how those Reeflux breathed new life into them. That is the new buzz bulb you have there! I had already decided if my coral pot started to lose ground, that I was gonna send it to you..... so far not too much change, but ya never know. I bet it would look better in your DT with those Refflux though! :tongue2: If I can't get my MH situation taken care of soon, you may have alot more than that! I'll just have to go day by day. The *&^*%@# company sent me the wrong MH Reflux so I have to wait till Monday before they ship another out. If my system degrades between now and then, I have decided to purchase the Hang on MH dealy until I can get my system squared away. lReef lKeeper 03-29-2008, 09:49 PM i would not worry to much about the bulb. as long as there is light getting to the coral they should be fine for a few days. you could always just turn the fixture so that one day the light is on one side and the nest day it is on the other side, by rotating it 180 degrees, if it comes down to it.
i am in love with these bulbs ... if i ever use anything else ... it will HAVE to be well proven to be better than these. Phurst 03-30-2008, 02:49 PM Glad your first treatment went well. I noticed a lot of pods survived in the nano when I treated as well. No idea why, cause if anything, I dosed a little extra.
Nice looking additions, and those chromis look geat! lReef lKeeper 03-31-2008, 03:04 PM i figured i would save these pics for my 2000th post !! here is a slide show ...

That was a mega razzle dazzle Bobby. You have some spectacular specimens in your DT. I bet you didn't really realize that you had as much as you did until you started takeing photographs. By the way, i saw your box marked "reflectors" in the shed. Phurst 04-05-2008, 05:28 PM Any signs of bugs between treatments? I never did, but treated 3 times anyway. lReef lKeeper 04-05-2008, 05:43 PM nope, no signs or no visible bugs ... i am going with 3 treatments too. better to be safe than sorry. Skurvey Dog 04-05-2008, 06:59 PM That is really beautiful Bobby! Hopefully in about 3-5 years I will be able to have my tank well established and start some frag trading of my own. We'll have to wait and see. Yeah V, im having a VERY hard time getting her back on that leash. every time i take it off she tries to come back the good ol' USA, but i think i got it back on and she is across the pond again. lReef lKeeper 04-07-2008, 06:00 PM well, i guess i can not call this my 125g SPS tank thread anymore !!
i added some new stuff last night ... ALL AUSSIE ACANS ... all except 1 have at least five polyps (not bad for 100% trade, huh ??)

LMAO, i am leaving that alone !!
i DID clean one end of the tank from coraline and got this decent pic ... and BTW ... the bubble algae seems to be dying off on its own. ALOT of it is turning white and disappearing in quite a few large areas. i am going to let it go and see if the skimmer and GFO are doing what they are suppose to be doing. i guess we can call this a test of sorts.

The tank looks good. well I didn't stop to just look at just the tank at first. ok lets get down to it.
Now how did you do the buckets in the sump? In easy sense did you just take a bucket and put in the sump with some flow, with no holes in the bucket, and just let the water flow over it? lReef lKeeper 05-16-2008, 06:25 PM the buckets have a hole in the top to let the flow into the bucket, and a hole on the side that cant be seen and small holes in the top for the water to flow ACROSS the surface of the sand at a fairly slow rate, so the sand is not disturbed to much. |
