View Full Version : White stuff on yellow tang!

I picked up this yellow tank at a LFS and after 2 weeks in quarrantine he developed this white stuff on his tail fin. Any idea what it might be? Thought it might be ich at first but 2 more weeks and the size or amount really hasn't changed. He eats normal and acts normal!

is it clumpy, or is the fin just white instead of yellow...

that looks like lymphocystis. a cottage cheesy looking growth usually on the fins of fish. i dont know if it is contageous to other fish but you can literally scrape it off the fishes fins. i never did that myself but quarintining with furazone green worked for me. usually takes a while for it to go away. if you dont treat, it will spread all over the fish.

if this is lymphocystis there is no treatment nor cure for it.but there is a bacterial or fungal infection that does highly resemble lymphocystis which can be cured with antibiotics also known as cotton I have treated this in the past with melafix or stronger antibiotics such as myricin .
the lymphocystis is more commonly found on the body of the fish more so than on the fins .and looks more like worts(coliflower) and cannot be removed in some cases it just goes away on is own and does not normally effect the fishes health in general.cotton on the hand if left untreated will spread and eventually lead to death
