Hello all,

I have just received confirmation that our proposal (myself and Rob Weatherly) to speak at the SITE (Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education) Conference in Las Vegas, NV in March 2008 has been accepted!!!

Title:
Engaging Students and Empowering Researchers: Embedding Assessment, Evaluation and History into Podcasting.

Subject:
We will be speaking about the podcasting experience that myself and Rob from Talkingreef had with the high school students in the first Project DIBS experiment. From a hobbyist side the podcast was a lot of fun for me, but this talk will be focusing on the educational research side of the podcast. We are not sure if Rob can make the conference yet or not, but Rob's name will be in lights if he can't make it physically. Heck, maybe we can arrange for Rob to join by live podcast!

I will post details once the talk has been scheduled and will post an abstract later.....

Kudos to Rob for allowing the podcast to happen in the first place and it was a fascinating experience from an educational research perspective!

The conference is a little steep ($75 to get in) and is primarily an academic conference, so it might not be everyone's cup of tea. But if enough people come then we can have a combined Talkingreef/Project DIBS lunch or dinner outside of the conference.

hey Brian, do we have exact dates and a location for this event?

The conference will be held at the Riveria Hotel and Conference center (all sessions in the Riveria) and the dates will be March 3-7th (Monday-Friday), 2008. However, our session has not been scheduled yet, they have until Jan 28th I believe to announce the exact schedule.

I probably will not attend the entire week, but depends on the schedule. With my luck they'll schedule us at 9am on Monday and my other talk at 3:30 on Friday :)

Brief Update:

The talk has been scheduled:

Date:
March 6th, 2007 (Thursday)

Time:
2:30-2:50pm (15 minutes presentation, 5 minutes Q&A). I will be happy to meet with people afterwards as well, short presentations like this are typical for this conference.

Abstract:
Podcasting is a rapidly emerging technology that is being explored in many areas of education. Initial classroom teacher reports show that K-12 students are interested in taking charge of creating podcasts, leading to increased student engagement. The authors’ experience using podcasting in a twelfth grade aquatic science classroom reveals that podcasting should be considered as a potential educational research tool that is engaging for students. The benefits of podcasting as an educational research tool are discussed along with suggested improvements.
