View Full Version : Galaxy Coral Arcar 03-10-2006, 09:31 PM Hello, I just got a Galaxy Coral for the LFS.. They tooled me that it was a good coral to have.. But I have been reading different things on them and allot of people said They are hard and they can kill other corals.. Now my question is.. Are they hard to keep? and can their tentacles really kill all my corals? b/c these things I guess can go fare.
I have PC lights, Will the Galaxy do ok with that?
And I have it under a filter will that flow kill it? Or can it do ok in a high flow area? this is one of those times where Pre research might have been helpful.. no offense, we all have done it.. :)
the Glaxea fascicularis is a coral that does have some special needs.
first off lighting, regular PC will likely not be enough, as these corals tend to like medium to high lighting.
Placement, placement of these corals is very important, as they are VERY aggressive. the y extend long sweeper tentacles, and these can pack a mighty powerful sting. they will easily damage or kill other coral that are too close.
these tentacles can also harm fish, commonly clown fish that try and host in one..
now, all that said, i you can meet these requirements, you will likely be able to keep these colony just fine, from what i know they are not a particularly difficult species to keep, but they do have disclaimers that i noted above. Arcar 03-10-2006, 09:51 PM Man, I would love to research the corals i want.. But I don't know what I want until I see it.. + I don't know what they have in stock.. I live about 1hr away from the LFS So, I cant go home and look it over b/c it's wast of time.. lol :) gwen_o_lyn 03-10-2006, 09:57 PM I have a galaxia also. I'd say they do well in at least moderate flow- not sure how high you are talking, but you don't wanna blow them away. I've had my galaxia for quite some time- no less than 2 years under PC lighting 4-65W bulbs.
You do have to watch their sweeper tentacles. I just had to move a hammer coral frag tonite because the galaxia was sending chemicals that way and almost killing a hammer polyp. I didn't see sweepers, but prolly just chemicals since the flow was going from the galaxia right to the hammer- anyway I think it was chemical warfare if anything. Just keep them away from corals.
This is how I see it- most corals are going to sting each other and fight for space and the galaxia does it better than most corals. Give a good distance around it. To me, they aren't hard to keep. gwen_o_lyn 03-10-2006, 10:05 PM older pic of it..

its good news that you can keep them under PC...
do you do any supplemental feeding?
Acar, things look promising as long as you give it its room.. :) 8251Reefer 03-11-2006, 12:51 AM Arcar, sorry about you geting "tooled" at the LFS . I am sure that was a Freudian slip....I think you will be fine as long as you keep it up high to mid level in your aquarium... good luck gwen_o_lyn 03-11-2006, 01:09 AM You can keep most LPS and I'm finding that SPS also do well under PC's. I have SPS in my 72 gal under PCs out growing SPS under MHs.
I feed my tank every other day and people say I feed a lot.... so plenty of food for fish and corals.... when I think about it, I'll throw in some cyclo-peeze- maybe once a week. No one starves in my tank- enuff food for every last hermit crab. Thank-you Mr. Skimmer!!
You're welcome Rob ;)
Rob- have you always had MHs? You can keep most LPS and I'm finding that SPS also do well under PC's. I have SPS in my 72 gal under PCs out growing SPS under MHs.
yes, this i know.. and just goes to show you that "SPS" and "LPS" tells you nothign about the corals needs... :)

this probably has alot to do with your success as there are many coral that have the ability to switch to a more heterotrophic feeding rather than being autorophic, not that all corals fall into one or the other... i found that in the few corals that i had that needed a bit more light, supplemental feeding and/or spot feeding had always proved to be a good methods as the corals showed to stay healthy and grow well
You're welcome Rob ;)
Rob- have you always had MHs?
no. my 30 gallon tank has been under 130W of PC for over 2 years now, my 100 started under about 440w PC for about 2-3 month before i got my MH. during that time i kept a variety of different types of coral, but most of which called for low to medium lighting. 8251Reefer 03-11-2006, 01:28 AM You said you have SPS under PC's Gwen? That is a very broad category. Care to elaborate on which species in particular you are talking about? Just curious... You said you have SPS under PC's Gwen? That is a very broad category. there are stony coral that fall into the "SPS" category that can be kept under PC or VHO lighting.
Montipora Digitata is a quick example of the top of my head, if nutrition and other environmental needs are met they can still do fine... again.. showing that SPS means nothing... gwen_o_lyn 03-11-2006, 10:07 AM You said you have SPS under PC's Gwen? I got pics of my sticks, but I have no clue as to what they are called. If you wanna identify my sticks and cups, by all means- go ahead!!!

All those sticks were photographed in my nano, however they were all fragged from my 72g which has the PC lighting.

That stick is growing just as well, if not better under my PCs Reefbaby 03-11-2006, 10:41 AM Hey Arcar! Check out this thread (http://www.talkingreef.com/forums/showthread.php?t=314&goto=nextoldest) for some info on good books to have. Next time you go to your LFS, you can take one of your coral and fish books with you and research them while you're there.
I still spend hours pouring over my books, mostly drooling, but also to get all the species and their needs/lighting/hardiness etc. compiled in this wee brain of mine!
Good luck with your Galaxia! I'm sure if you just keep in mind the sweeper tentacles, you'll probably be okay! :-) |
