I have a kill-a-watt meter. It is a great little tool to have laying arround. I would definetly get one if you have the chance.

I also have a kill-a-watt meter and believe it is a good device to have, especially if you are trying to determine your tanks actual power useage. That said, mine sits in a drawer most of the time.

Rob -

One other thought regarding the max amount for a water change. IMO, if it's an emergency, a 100% water change is a posibility if it is the only option. My friend had a Rio pump leak oil into his tank. The water was extremely polluted, and he ended up replacing almost all of the water. While some corals died, many survived, as did all the fish. So I guess if it's a drastic enough emergency, I would have no problem with water changes greater than 40% - 50%.

I had a Rio do that too. Luckily I was using it to mix water and all I did was ruin a batch of saltwater, not my aquarium.

That is why I will not use any of the TAAM products, Rio, Seio, and others. They are junk. There are other products out there that won't explode in your tank that are reasonably priced.

In regards to the kill-a-watt meter, Most DIY guys have one laying around for trying to get the most out of their skimmer. When you mesh mod a skimmer pump, you need to check the wattage before and after the mod to check that it isn't pulling too much wattage. This can burn up the pump pretty quickly. This is usually because the mesh or zip ties are dragging on the volute of the pump.

A good product to use to create a moisture barrier in a fish room or whatever else is KILZ. It is a type of primer that is made to resist moisture. This is what I would use in a fish room and then put some good quality latex or oil based paint over the top of it. Flat, semi gloss, or gloss really has nothing to do with it.

"With that being said"(Rob), I will try to be online to help with some of the DIY questions that may come up. I just started listening to the live show and didn't even know about it before this week. Now that I know, I will do my best to tune in.
