Shark Of Sweden 11-07-2007, 11:44 AM I bought a sacropyton from a friend 2 days ago......
....it still haven´t opend up with the polyps...:-(
And now some of the brown algie that grows on the sand is starting 2 grow on the edges of the sacropyton...
What can be wrong???
Here is a pic. Reefbaby 11-07-2007, 12:46 PM Hej Timmy!
Make sure there's plenty of flow for the Sarcophyton. They need to be able to shed their mucous layer, especially when they've been touched or transported. In the meantime, take a turkey baster (or something similar) and blow off the brown algae that's accumulating on it so that it doesn't get infected.
Have you checked your nitrate and phosphate levels lately? I see lots of bubbles on your rocks, which could be indicative of cyanobacteria. Try to find out what the source could be. How often do you do water changes? What's your water flow in the system?
By the way, where in Sweden are you?! Har det bra! Shark Of Sweden 11-07-2007, 01:15 PM Hej Timmy!

Yes:-) We make them alot here in sweden!:-) Astrivian 11-08-2007, 08:21 AM Oh man, i am just imagining walking down through your town (which i have never seen) in the early morning smelling cinnamon buns cooking in all the houses.
i need plane tickets from Colorado to Göteborg, Sweden for a frag swap! Think my wife will go for that :p Shark Of Sweden 11-08-2007, 08:29 AM Why don´t you tell your wife 2 bake some:-)?
I have a great recipe!:-) Reefbaby 11-08-2007, 09:11 AM Oh man, i am just imagining walking down through your town (which i have never seen) in the early morning smelling cinnamon buns cooking in all the houses.

actually....the most of them smell more of cardamom than cinnamon, but they are still terrific!
Hey Astrivian - we should meet up over Xmas...I'm planning on flying home to visit family! Hmmm...too bad it's too far to bring some frags for you! Astrivian 11-08-2007, 09:37 AM Oh thats a cool idea Christi. How long will you be in Colorado? I am actually going back to Washington D.C. for part of Xmas but maybe our stays will overlap some.
That's true about the frags! I finally have my lights up and running the way they should be, and i am slowly stepping up my flow, so now i am on a frag kick! I always thought xenia was cool too :) Reefbaby 11-08-2007, 09:53 AM I will be home for about a month....in Boulder...so it's just a hop, skip, and a jump away! My brother and Dad are in Denver, so I'm there often as well. I'll PM you with my details! I thought you might say that Timmy.
I do have a reef-related question for you: What are you using for flow in your tank? Shark Of Sweden 11-09-2007, 08:21 AM i only have 422 gallons / hour
I know thats not much but i will get a koralia streamer soon! CarmieJo 11-09-2007, 10:40 PM Hey Timmy,
We had an exchange student from Göteborg and she never made cinnamon buns! Next Swedish student we will have to make sure to get one who cooks! Reefbaby 11-10-2007, 05:10 AM Hej Timmy,
look forward to meeting you tonight! Ted's got some fantastic coral frags and a great selection of invertebrates! looking forward to trying out your "bulle"! :) Shark Of Sweden 11-10-2007, 05:14 AM hahaha the same!:-) I think i have to bake ALOT of bullar!:-) Shark Of Sweden 11-12-2007, 06:28 PM One of my new coral have it polyps like bubbles and there is slime on it....someone said it can be "Polyp bailout".
It this coral.....don´t know the name... Reefbaby 11-13-2007, 02:14 AM Timmy - I would try moving it a bit down in the tank in order for it to acclimate to the new lighting. I assume you're using metal halides? Ted had the corals all at the bottom, plus he had the light up higher for his display tanks.
How's the coral doing today? It'd be a pity to lose that one - it's such a beauty!
It was quite cold on Saturday evening, so maybe the coral is just a bit stressed from the transport. Give it a couple of days. Make sure there's enough flow... Shark Of Sweden 11-13-2007, 04:39 AM it looks fine now!:-) I think it was just a one time thing! Reefbaby 11-13-2007, 04:54 AM Great!! Glad to hear that....it probably just needed to adjust! Shark Of Sweden 11-13-2007, 06:29 PM its called:
Montipora confusa
:-) Shark Of Sweden 01-30-2008, 02:45 PM Hey everybody!
I have a problem....i hope i will get an answer from somebody here. :-)
Look at these to pics! The first one is like 6 month ago and the second is taken right now.
Here come the question,......WHY is my Favia so pale!!??? I feed it.....it has enought light and all that!
It´s on the bottom sandbed....is it to far away from the light?
I DON`T know what to do....
HELP
:shout: Reefbaby 01-30-2008, 03:23 PM Hi Timmy!
actually, it looks like it has good polyp expansion. Is the white actual tissue or skeleton. From the picture, it still looks like tissue. Is it still feeding? Do you see it actively feeding?
What are you parameters? How deep is your tank? What kind of lights are you using?
Are you doing the Zeovit system? Also, you might want to dose for Iron, as Iron is responsible for bringing out a lot of the green color in green corals. Are all your other parameters good (nitrates/phosphates)? Shark Of Sweden 01-30-2008, 03:52 PM yes its feeding after the light has gone out... i have started useing:
*merwasser complex
*iron
*iodin
*coral vitalizer
im gonna do a 40% waterchange for the first time! Reefbaby 01-30-2008, 04:08 PM Is the white around the green skeleton or tissue?
Is this your first water change?? Why 40%? Shark Of Sweden 01-30-2008, 04:13 PM Yes its tissue.... and its very meaty in the night with all tentacles
I think Ted said 40%.... ...do u think another volume'?
Its my first water change Reefbaby 01-31-2008, 04:15 AM 40% is quite a bit and could be a shock to the system.
Remind me of the size of your system and how long you've had it up and running.
Typically people would do a 40% water change if there were things dying in the tank or scary high nitrate/ammonia levels, or if something went drastically wrong in the tank.
10-20%/month is a pretty good amount to go by, but again, it all depends on your system and the size/stability of it. Some much larger tanks can go longer without changes, or only need smaller changes. Of course, the amount of bioload will also influence this as well.
I would opt for something more between 10-20%.
In terms of your coral, if it's beefed up and eating well, I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long as there is no tissue recession. Was the first image from in your system? It looked to be up on the rocks at that point. Is it much lower in the tank now? Shark Of Sweden 01-31-2008, 11:33 AM Yes its like 5-10cm lower now and in the sandbed. I have had my tank running since july -07. And the watersize is 130 liters...
110 liters in tank and 20 liters in sump CarmieJo 02-04-2008, 11:44 PM I was reading an article by Daniel Knop and he indicated that he changes about 12% of his water a month but divides it into four weekly 3% water changes. So for your tank if you changed about 4L of water each week you would be hitting his target. I've been changing more like 10% a week so I may consider cutting back. Shark Of Sweden 02-04-2008, 11:50 PM ahaaaa i changed like 4 litern now and i have a saltlevel: 1,026 now is that ok? CarmieJo 02-05-2008, 12:11 AM Hi Timmy, the salt is fine. I keep mine between 1.025-1.026. Shark Of Sweden 02-05-2008, 12:13 AM oki thanks:-) I hope my favia will be getting darker soon!:-) |
