I have never seen this fish in any fish store, but I have always admired it in various books. Now that I see how much one of these puppies costs, I understand why fish stores don't carry them. That, and it's not reef safe.
I'm suprised they don't throw in free shipping with this purchase! Amphibious 10-26-2007, 08:49 AM From the Southern part of the Great Barrier Reef, Conspicillatus Angels are seldom collected. The fish at Liveaquaria is the smallest one I've ever seen, 3". Always expensive, they are usually 6" or larger and require a large well established aquarium, I'd say 180 minimum. In my long (40 year) career of prowling LFS and wholesale outlets I can remember seeing only a couple. In the '70s collecting on the GBR was not as regulated as it is today. veriann 10-26-2007, 09:02 AM Ampage wrote "In the '70s collecting on the GBR was not as regulated as it is today."
even though we still have the most diverse populations of sea life on the planet, im not a church going man so i say this as im melting "A-men to that ampage" Pescaiolo 10-26-2007, 09:55 AM "Please note: if you do not complete your order by checking out, someone else may order this specimen."
I wanna be the friend of that other person who does order this specimen. WOW!!! 3700 dollars for a fish?! For that price one can get a ticket to Australia and go catch one themselves! It looks like a powder brown tang only $3650 bucks more. I'll take the tang please. :)
So they are so expensive because they are smaller than normal? I wonder why they are smaller... Amphibious 10-26-2007, 10:17 AM Size (3") is a small factor in this price because a smaller specimen ships better/easier and comes through in better health, at least in theory. Juveniles are hard to come by. The high cost is more due to the remote location of their range, low numbers in the wild and difficulty in transporting them first to a holding facility, then exporter, importer, wholesaler and LFS. Remember Liveaquaria is an on-line retailer, the last in the chain of possession before you the buyer. They have a great reputation and Drs F&S bought Liveaquaria a few years ago boosting their reputation even farther. CarmieJo 10-26-2007, 10:20 AM Darn, I was going to order him until you said he was not reef safe!:rotfl: Danamck 10-26-2007, 10:47 AM Darn, I was going to order him until you said he was not reef safe!:rotfl:
Sure you were!
And I'm here thinking ... new LED lights for the 240, or a 3" fish? As much as I love super rare fish, I'd have to go with the lights. Amphibious 10-26-2007, 11:01 AM You got that right! Me to. veriann 10-26-2007, 11:09 AM classic!
I have that same problem D, although mine is... upgrade to a new russian bride, or one way ticket for the misses :love!:ether way your still happy with your purchase price..lol poppin_fresh 11-06-2007, 08:44 PM Hmmm... buy the fish, wait 2 days and then call and tell them it died. Hello free $3700 dollar fish, thank you 14 day guarantee!
Ok, I dont really condone this tactic, I just feel like being a smart azz. :D They'll most likely want the body back on that one! clownfish4me 11-07-2007, 12:53 AM wow, this fish cost just about what i have invested into my entire 90gal. reef tank! I'll leave this one to the " well off " members of the reefing community! :D xtmreef 01-21-2008, 02:19 PM .........and I thought I got ripped by paying $49.95 for a Purple Tang :D Amphibious 01-21-2008, 02:30 PM A Purple Tang at $50 is a steal. I've seen them lately at over $100. Danamck 01-21-2008, 09:48 PM Yep - we pay $100 here in California. But they do look cool for a while if you got the cash you can get about anything you want :tongue2::unsure::cool:
I am Bad about it also but i have kept some stuff alive they used to say might live 6 months if you are lucky. cr8signs 04-07-2008, 10:53 PM I was at the store a couple of weeks ago, and believe it or not they had 4 of them there for sale!!. My area reef club was allowed to have a tour of their facilities and we were able to see everything they had. It is an awesome place. I was there last summer for a tour also and at that time they had 2 morish idols there. Both extremely healthy. Since then they have both been sold, but I know they had them in their coral tanks for a very, very long time, healthy and fat. They will have the tour again this summer in June, I think around the 20th. veriann 04-08-2008, 03:20 AM cool , 4 in one place isn't bad at all.
This one was going for a tad over a grand i believe. At the end of the day, i dont really concider it a worthwhile buy, say's me thats forever buying crap i dont really need!
