I have seen many post about the crappy suction cups that ship with most power heads. Every time I tell myself that it wont happen to me. Well guess what happened to me. Yup, sand storm. one side of my tank was now bb.

So I fixed the substrate and broke out my test kits. the only thing I can notice is the ammonia levels are slightly high. not scary high just a little bit. everything else seems fine. I have read so many bad things about stirring up your sand bed that I'm a little nervous about the accuracy of my API test kits.

Should a 8 or 9 month old sandbed be this clean?

Is it a SSB or DSB?

about 2 inches deep so I would guess its a SSB. I would like it to be deeper but I'm not to sure about adding more sand.

I think you are probably OK. I would do a 20% water change to dilute any chemicals that have been released. I would also run some carbon to help remove compounds from the water.

You can add more sand to the existing sand bed but in a 20 you could take up a lot of tank volume by going to a DSB.
