Last Sunday was a great show for those that wasn't there.... There was alot of good topics,,,,,, But since the show I have completed a 10% water and added 20 lbs of live sand.... Man my tank looks so clean right now..... Plus I will stop feeding my tank everynight befor I go to bed....I know it was a bad idea.....I will start to keep a log. now.... Now my question is this...... I have a 30 gal sump.... will it be hard to turn half of that to a refugia and how....or should I buy one that hangs on the back.... or do I even need one at all since it just a 75 gal...... I learn the hard way by buying stuff without asking.... So if anybody have any idea..... let me know.....Blue

Hi Blue,

It was great having you on the show! A fuge does not need to be big or complicated to be effective. I have limited room under my corner tank and my sump is a converted wet/dry filter. In the compartment that was designed to hold bio-balls I have caulerpa. It is home to TONS of pods and snails. This article has a picture of my sump/fuge Reefreaders - Refugium (http://www.reefreaders.com/content/view/25/1/) and it will help you with establishing a fuge. Since I wrote the article I have added a chaeto ball to my "bubble trap". This is a 2L bottle sitting in my sump that I run the effluent from my skimmer into. The chaeto does great in there and, as an added bonus, helps to further limit the bubbles.

Blue, you should be in good shape there. I have a 30 gallon sump as well, and have turned half of it into a fuge. I just bought some egg crate from the hardware store and cut a piece to create a partition in the sump to keep the cheato in one half of it. That and some lights is all you need to get started. Maybe some LR rubble in there too if you're looking to grow some pods.

Effulent, carmie, :huh:whats that?? sounds french..lol

Blue jay, sumps are to increase total water volume & a great place to hide the nick nacks you dont want in the DT. If you convert half to a fuge, your not losing volume, its just a slower water movement section with a uselful purpose. At the end of the day, as long as you have a clear line of sight(generalisation) from the dump pipes to the return pumps without risk of starving the flow & dry running your pumps your laughing:agree:
