Which is better and why? Frozen or Freeze-Dried Cyclopeeze? Please post why and what you have had the best results with for both fish and corals. Thanks!

Good question Phil. I doubt that anyone has done research on that question but, I'll bet we got opinions. Here's mine.

I first used the freeze dried because it was available before the frozen. I bought a canister and my fish loved it. I would hydrate it with tank water, let it soak a while, stir it up and begin feeding.

The first frozen Cyclopeeze came in large block form. Too much for the average reefer to deal with and expensive besides. A dealer began breaking off chunks and selling it that way. I bought a chunk and was instantly convinced, frozen was the way to go. Easier to prepare, just thaw, and the fish seemed to like it better. They went after it with gusto. I'm not sure the freeze-dried retains as much food value as does the frozen.

So my choice is Frozen. It's a great food item for fish, filter feeders like clams and featherdusters and our corals.

I use the frozen as well and have never used the freeze dried so I have no comparison. I have heard other people saying that they prefer the frozen over the freeze dried. Freeze drying can retain many of the nutrients of a product as can flash freezing. One of the problems I see that could degrade the nutritional quality of the frozen is thawing and re-freezing. I have seen people swish the bar back & forth through the tank to feed which has to thaw the next layer. I shave mine off the bar but it still has to thaw a little while it it out of freezer.

Hi,

I use frozen as well. I thaw a little chunk in R O water using the feeding cup. The fish seem to like this much better than the freeze dried stuff.

The feeding response is night and day between frozen and freeze dried food. The fish are all over thawed, and just factoring in that they appear to eat more, they should get more nutrition (all things being equal). All things aren't equal, though. Freeze drying preserves nutrients fairly well, but time with air-exposure is much more detrimental than the same amount of time sealed and frozen. I think most anyone who has used both now uses frozen. Just buy an amount that you can feed off quickly, either way!

I think I last bought it at Aquatica. But closer to you I think that Aquacade may carry it.

Plus anyone whose ever tasted freeze dried ice cream knows that it can't hold a candle to frozen ice cream. No comparison. Case closed. :)
