1 month old tank but got fully cured LR covered in purple corraline from someone breaking their tank down. 2 weeks ago noticed this dark maroon redish film algae grow and is about 2 " diameter surrounded by purple corroline. first thought it was red algae. but from my research found that
1. you can get red corraline algae
2. when i first noticed it i tried to use a tooth brush to scrub it off and wont unless i do it really really hard for a while.
3. its not fuzzy.. it was probably originally slimy but only touched after i tried to brush it off.
I know its hard with out a pic but from my descriptions... what do you think it is?

it might be Cyanobacteria a red slime algae.....if you can get a picture up.... I sure somebody can ID it.... for now cut back on your light.... and start using R.O or D.I water if you not..... to top off.... I hope you find out want it is..... but check the net and see if its Cyanobacteria.... thats what it sounds like.....

Like blue said, throw a pic up... there are several things it could be. Don't go at it with a toothbrush anymore just in case it something you may not want to harm.
I wouldn't recommend turning off lights though. It doesn't work for cyano, altough it may be a contributing factor, the appearance of cyano mainly comes from a problem of flow, detritus and general excessive nutrients.

Does it look something like the attached pic? It's a red algae and I've never found it to get out of hand. I have it in a few spots and it really hasn't chnaged much in 3 years. There's a chance it's being outcompeted by all my other macro in this tank. I wouldn't touch it.... it's harmless and adds diversity.

This stuff is not calcareous and feels soft/slimy.
Coralline can come in all different colors, but what ya see is what ya get and it won't change colors as it ages. Different types have different light requirements. There ar eboth high and low light corallines

i have what looks like that growing on my rocks too. i always thought it to be red Coraline though. it is hard and feels the same as the purple/pink Coraline on the same rock.
