View Full Version : Hydor Koralia 3 Circulation Pump/Powerhead UL 850 gph tdkarl 09-24-2007, 09:41 AM I am thinking about getting two of these for my 75 gal reef tank. I would put one on oposite sides of the tank. I thought two Koralia 3's would be sufficient. Any thoughts or recomendations? Amphibious 09-24-2007, 10:25 AM Tony,
The Koralia's are a great pump and very reasonably priced. They can be a bit hard to find. I ordered a bunch of them from my supplier and waited two months to get them. The supplier only filled half my order. I know Premium and Drs F&S were out for awhile too. The Koralia pumps are made in Italy and popular in Europe, too. I guess the manufacturer should boost production to make them more available. tdkarl 09-24-2007, 10:30 AM Thanks for the input, what about putting these on a wave make? This one seems resonably priced? JBJ Ocean Pulse - DUO Wavemaker (2 pump Capacity) (Saltwater Aquarium Supplies > Wavemakers > External ) (http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewItem~SearchStr~ocean%20pulse~action~view~id Product~JB6111~idCategory~FIWMEW~category~JBJ_Ocea n_Pulse___DUO_Wavemaker_(2_pump_Capacity)_Saltwate r_Aquarium_Supplies_Wavemakers_External~vendor~.ht ml) Amphibious 09-24-2007, 11:04 AM There was a thread about the Koralia not performing well on a wavemaker. I'm not sure if it was on TR or another site. Don't tell Rob I visit other sites. :rotfl:
It's something to do with the pulsing and the Koralia's magnetic coupling between motor and impeller. I'm not sure, can't remember. But, Koralia has stated they are working on a wavemaker for the koralia.
I'm not familiar with the WM you selected. I have an old wavemaker that I've never used. I'll set it up and see how it works. I have a 135 with one #4 Koralia. Now that I finally have more in stock I can try the wavemaker with two of them. I'll get back to this thread later today with the results.
I'm sending you a PM.
Dick tdkarl 09-24-2007, 11:32 AM wow ya great let me know your results with the wave maker. Phurst 09-24-2007, 11:57 AM Tagging along for the results. i have 2 4s in my 120. Amphibious 09-24-2007, 01:35 PM Well, the switching device has been running for 2 hours and I can't see a problem. The Koralias are coming on and off as the unit switches circuits. I'm pleased and my corals seem to be responding favorably by extending their polyps further. I think it's time to feed. tdkarl 09-24-2007, 01:59 PM what switching device are you using? Amphibious 09-24-2007, 07:53 PM This switching device is a Sandpoint. I don't think they are in business any more. I bought a bunch of them in the early '90s and this one was discovered in a box of aquarium stuff when we moved to FL in 2005. It was brand new. Works great. It has a third timed control that shuts off the main pump for a set period of time for feeding, then comes back on automatically. Nice unit. tdkarl 09-24-2007, 10:11 PM Well I ordered my pumps plus a JBJ Ocean Pulse - DUO Wavemaker (2 pump Capacity). Can't wait to get everything and hook it up!!!!! Thanks for the input everyone! Also thanks Rob for the early #5 podcast on pumps. I listened to it again today to figure out what capacity I should use. Love this site. I dont get on here enough but when ever I need advice I always can count on everyone for the best! I have 2 Koralia 4's and 2 or the 3's in my 75 and I love them. I am going to buy a couple 1's or the new nano's for behind the rocks. Some people say they are too big but honestly after having the Seio 1500 and 2600 in my tank they look tiny. tdkarl 09-25-2007, 10:18 AM wow, you need some more power heads dude. jk tdkarl 09-26-2007, 06:31 PM Anyone have a suggestion for the setting on the wave maker? I have one pump in each rear corner of the tank pointed toward the front middle glass. Amphibious 09-26-2007, 06:44 PM Turn it on and play with the setting until you get the results that are pleasing to you. Everything in the tank will enjoy the current.
Dick lReef lKeeper 09-26-2007, 07:08 PM i am a little late here, but Hydor is suppose to be coming out with a wave maker specificly for the Koralias. they are shooting for the end of the year. tdkarl 09-26-2007, 07:41 PM To late allready bought the JBJ model. What settings do other people have? Secs, minutes, ect... tdkarl 09-26-2007, 07:45 PM d you think the fish prefer the current? Amphibious 09-26-2007, 08:21 PM On the reef there is a lot of current so I guess it's what they are used to. Wouldn't have a clue whether they like it or not. I guess you could say Mother Nature has a plan for the good of all and current is part of the plan. tdkarl 09-28-2007, 05:05 PM Ya i noticed when i just plug the pumps in the make a clicking sound. I will be interested to see when i have the switching device hooked up if it makes that noice. Could be annoying. But regardless I love the pumps, i just may wait for Hydor to come out with thier switching device. ReeferLogan 10-17-2007, 05:17 PM Tony,

Idk but a rep told me the problem with availability is a legal thing. He indicated there was some sort of lawsuit between Tunze and Hydors, Tunze suing Hydor for patent infringement? Your "in the biz" as well, heard anything on this? I know what u mean, getting them is a real hassle; order 24, receive 5...
Cheers,
Logan Amphibious 10-17-2007, 11:34 PM No, I haven't heard of patent infringements. |
