Hey there! Could anyone with chillers fill me in on how much noise they give off? I'm thinking of getting a 1/10 hp Current USA chiller for my upcoming 20 gal nano and I was concerned about the noise. Are there chillers that are more quiet? I have no idea because I've never seen a chiller in action before.

Thanks!

Chillers are relatively quiet. There a somewhat different animal as a refrigerator. It would depend on your sensitivity to noise. I hear mine come on but, after the initial start up it's pretty quiet. A 1/10 should be silent compared to larger chillers.

I know that's not much of a definitive answer but it is all I got.

Is it bigger than a bread box? ;) lol

Well, is is louder than a CPR HoB skimmer? I've had a CPR skimmer suck'n air and that wasn't too bad.

I would say that my chiller is relatively loud but it doesn't drown the TV out. It is an Aquanetics (no longer made) 1/5 hp drop in and I think the noise comes from the fan vibrating when it runs. It is not louder than my overflow.

It is hard to really judge since it was running in a large hall with lots of people but the Teco inline chiller at MACNA sounded much quieter.

Any specific brands you've found to be particularly quiet? I've had zero experience with chillers so any info would be eagerly appreciated. :)

My 1/3 HP chiller (brand: Pacific something-or-other) was quiet but not powerful enough to cool off my 210 gal system. I replaced it with a 2 HP Aquamedic, which works great but is very very loud. I had to build a closet-like structure around it (and all the other supporting equipment) to cut the noise. All is well now. Jay

I have threatened to punch a hole in the wall between the living room and garage and put the chiller out there. But, in the summer with the temperature at 100+ it may not work all that well.
