Well it was a sad morning at my place as i got ready for work and wanted to check out my tank for a few extra minutes and found that my cleaner shrimp had molted. i was at first suprised and excited to see my little fellow growing. But to my dismay i saw him floating the back of my tank. apparently in the process or something of that time during the period i was sleeping one of two things happened. A. my shrimp molted, then was attacked, probably by my lantern bass. or b. my shrimp molted and died of something i dont know. i iodine the tank once a week with lugals but just one drop. so anyone else have difficulties with shrimps?

Corygm, in my personal opinion I would recommend not dosing your aquarium with the Lugol's solution manufactured by Kent Marine. Shrimp and varies other invertebrates are extermely sensitive to swings of chemicals within the water that they live in. Lugol's solution is extremely potent and even adding 1 drop of this solution weekly would eventually lead to a build up of Iodine in your aquarium that could have caused his demise. Iodine in my personal opinion is one of those chemicals that is not used up in a home aquarium to the point that extra dosing is required, normal water changes will do just fine in replenishing the small amount that is used. I would personally recommend using Lugol's Solution as a dip for corals, in a separate bucket add 40 drops Lugol's Solution to 1 gallon aquarium water, and immerse coral for 10-15 minutes if you are attempting to rid the Corals of Parasites and harmful Bacteria. :)

Considerations for use:

Kent Lugol's Solution is a very strong source of iodine, and must be dosed carefully, according to the directions. Lugol's Solution is very useful for xenia, soft and stony corals, and other polyp cnidarians. This product is best applied to an aquarium by adding it to a strong current of water where it can be circulated into the aquarium over a prolonged period of time. Lugol's Solution can also be diluted at a ratio of 1 drop to 4 oz. aquarium water in a separate cup and targeted directly up-current from xenia colonies or soft corals, but take care when using this method (not all corals will react the same; stony corals do not generally appreciate this target method of applying Lugol's).
The benefits of using Lugol's Solution with Concentrated Iodine Supplement™ and Tech•I are that invertebrates are provided with continuous sources of iodine and iodide. When using Lugol's Solution in conjunction with Concentrated Iodine Supplement, administer Concentrated Iodine at ½ the recommended dosage, and do not dose both products on the same day. When using Lugol's Solution in conjunction with Tech•I, administer either product at ½ the recommended dosage and allow 3-4 days between dosing Lugol's and Tech•I.
If you suspect that you have overdosed the aquarium with Lugol’s Solution, add 1 drop of Kent Chlorinex or Ammonia Detox per 2 drops of Lugol’s that was overdosed, to the aquarium. Do not dose Lugol’s Solution within 24 hours of treating an aquarium with either Chlorinex or Ammonia Detox.

Thanks for reminding me why I DON'T dose with Kent's Lugol's solution. Any additive that potent should be expected to cause trouble unless handled with extreme caution. I've never used the product and consider it unnecessary. My softies are doing fine without it.

aha, i did like a wee itsy bitty drop yesterday evening, im 100% sure this killed him. dang it my lfs store said i would need it, so what the heck am i spossed to do with it. like only a diluted bit after a water change?

there are less potent iodine and iodide additives if you want to use them, however i would HIGHLY recommend the use of a iodine test kit. Its one of the supplements that can be helpful if does right, but very dangerous if overdosed

Amp is right, many people keep many coral and inverts without additional iodine additives, but if you test and dose properly it may be beneficial

Coryg, you can always use the solution as a preventative measure against harmful Parasites and Bacteria. Once you purchase a new Coral and you use a drip method to acclimate the water parameters to that of your aquarium within a seperate container you can dose the Lugol's Solution in the containers water and leave the coral for about 10 to 15 minutes maximum. (I personally would underdose rather then overdose the Lugol's Solution based on how large of a container you are using.) This way you can benefit from it's preventative capabilities rather then dosing directly into your Aquarium.
